Thank you both for that.

I do know about the markers on the side of the motorway and that they have a picture of a phone with an arror pointing forward or backwards towards the nearest emergency phone, plus a number so you can say exactly where you are.

The mobile bit sounds pheasable but it seems a lot of money (the signs and instalation can't be that cheap) just to say where you are, and if your not concentrating and missed the sign, then you wouldn't know where you were exactly and so you would use the markers on the motorway.

I'm still unsure as to there real purpose ???
