Is it possible to set a co-ordinate as your destination in SmartST ??? (eg. N 51° 18.121 E 000° 34.366)
I can only see options for addresses or POI's.
The other option would be to set a POI at that co-ordinate, but can you do this ???
I have only had the software since yesterday, and have not found out a way to do it yet. |

No, you cannot get routing to a long/lat position in SmartST. Hopefully this feature will appear in V4!

As Ulf says, you can't (yet) route to a set of coordinates , nor can you create a POI at a set of coordinates on the device. However, if you have the time, you can create POIs on the Desktop software using the POIEditor and then transfer them to the device. On the PPC version then you have to have the device connected to be able to use the POIEditor, though. I assume, but don't know definitely if, the iCN series are the same.

Another option, if you have a registry editor, is to create a favourite... it doesn't matter where. You can then edit the registry key containing the Latitude and Longitude for that favourite.
e.g.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Navman\Smartst Pro\Favourites\Items\Keyed\KFAVNAME\Latlong
where FAVNAME is whatever you called your favourite.

If I did that, what would SmartST do once I got off-road ???
Will it tell me the direction I need to travel, or will it try to send me back to the nearest "acceptable" road ???
Would it give me a pointer, or say "Continue for XX metres in *This* direction" ??? |

It won't take you off-road. If it thinks you are off-road it will just tell you to drive to the nearest road.

It sounds like you might want to consider a different GPS package. For 'off road' and co-ordinates have you considered Memory Map?

All the topographical software packages, which are ideal for 'off road' wether it be driving or walking, have demos.

The one that is attracting my attention at the moment is a Microsoft Product Street & trips 2005
Apparently compatible with PC, PPC and smartphones
No more of this snagged in silly stupid programing
In a way I can't wait for my maps to be outdated
Groovy!
ps - streetwise I mean I don't think MS do topo (yet?) |

Have you seen the maps on Streets and Trips? (which is the US version by the way)
If you look at Autoroute (EU version) maps they are nowhere near as good as Navman or TomTom. And it does not provide voice guidance or any guidance for that matter. It merely plots your position on the map.
Don't get me wrong, it works and is pretty accurate but it is no substitute for a proper sat nav product.

Streets & Trips 2005 has advantage of very updated map data and very easy to locate the address on laptops. Problem - it has no sound as someone already indicated.
On PPC, when exporting maps to PPC, each map is limited to below 5 MB, i.e. within 30 minutes drive, you need to change maps and there is no way you can merge the maps. Its only good when you are in that city. |
