Good evening! I am using the EMTAC sleeve with an iPAQ 3870 and need to replace my memory card. I'd prefer to use SD on the iAPQ over CF on the sleeve - is there any downside to this?

Also, could someone advise the best all-round cards as I have seen some negative response over certan types.

Thanks for your help

In general CF will give you faster speed than SD. SD can also cause some problems, my ipaq would crash every 10 minutes using SD but with CF it is solid as a rock!

Hi Gollom,

There are a few SD cards that don’t perform that well with PPCs. CF cards are generally not so bad.

I use a Kingston 512MB SD card in my iPAQ 3970 and it works OK. I also use Kingston 1000MB CF cards in my iPAQ 2210. Personally, I’m happy with Kingston cards. A good place to get cards is Valueflash.

Regards,

Is there any special brands one should stay away from?

I'm also loojing for a new storage card to store TT3 maps and other stuff on. I would prefer SD so I have the CF slot free for future expansions but if CF is faster maybe it's better to go with that. Heard that CF consumes more battery though?

Hi Gollom

I am running a very similsr setup to you. For the first year of ownership, I had a 256MB CF card for the maps in the sleeve. This was a Kingmax card, which I believe is a rebadged Sandisk? I had quite a lot of problems with crashes and freezing etc which was attributed to the low 32MB of RAM on the iPAQ. I subsequently upgraded to a 512MB Viking CF card for additional maps. As if by magic, all my operational difficulties vanished. It's therefore important to select a quality built card, even for CF as opposed to SD.

Also, I believe I am correct in saying that the iPAQ 38** series didn't implement SD opereation particulalrly well, as there is only a very narrow bandwidth for data transfer from the card. I suapect that others on the forum will be able to shed more light on this.

Hope this helps.

Regards
