Having recently bought and set up the Tomtom 3 Dell Axim Sat Nav Kit successfully (with valuable help from this forum) I am now trying to copy music on to the Dell Axim Pocket PC - without success.
I have opened Windows Media Player V 7.01 on my main computer, and clicked on the PORTABLE DEVICE. Under the Music to Copy I have selected ALL AUDIO which lists 'everything' on my hard drive including some .mid files which I want to copy. I have unticked 'everything' and then ticked the required .mid files. When I hit the COPY MUSIC button at the top, I get a message saying 'The Specified Stream Type is not recognised' and no files are copied.
As an alternative I have then put a CD into Drive D and although Windows Media Player on my main computer starts playing the CD, it doesn't list it under the Music to Copy options. So it doesn't seem that I can copy those tracks on to the pocket PC either.
Am I being too optimistic in thinking that I can use the Windows Media program on the Dell Axim?
Being a novice at this I would appreciate help in non-technical language!

I have just dragged an mp3 file on to my storage card on my pda, i just clicked the MP3 player, and it started playing, did not even have to find the file.
If you don't have any mp3 files, just use Media Player on your main pc to rip the files off your cd's.
It's that easy, if you want to convert other media files to mp3 and have not got the software, just do a google search for a mp3 file converter, lots of free plus payware programs. I use Blaze Media Pro, but thats a $50 program, but can convert music files to different formats as well as video that i use it most for.
Thanks for your help. I have to admit that I didn't know what you meant by 'rip the files off your cds' until I downloaded a prog called SWITCH from Australia. Mind you it was one of the most involved programs I have ever installed but it ripped the tracks from a CD on to my hard drive (took about 45 mins), changing them to mp3 files.
I then copied and pasted one of the mp3 files on to the pocket pc - in the windows media player program file - and, as you said, when I opened the windows media player it played the file after the window logo bit. Having said that, I shan't bother to transfer any more as, even though I have the volume turned up to max, it is barely audible and the quality is 'tinny'.

I have a similar problem.
Following the excellent advice in this thread, I opened Active Link/Explorer and then dragged an mp3 file from my desktop into 'program files/Windows Media Player' directory .... but Windows player does not 'see' it in the play list.
Any ideas please.
As a matter of interest I can transfer .wav files (massive) to the PDA and when clicking on them a very small box with a play and stop button will play the item ... but it doesn't run with media player.
According to the PDA my windows is Pocket PC v 4.20.1081 (build13100, and the windows media player is v 9.0 _________________ TomTom Start 25 M UK & ROI

Hello mrchips,
My PDA has an Mp3 Player on it, which I thought was included with Windows Mobile 2003, but now I have had a look on the About screen, it says that it is:
Mp3Player - Version 1.6 - Copyright MEDION - 2002-2004.
Sorry if I have mislead you all, did not know this was not a standard part of Windows Mobile 2003.

45 minutes??! Get yourself a registered copy of MusicMatch (about $25). Very good bit of software and it'll rip a CD in a couple of minutes. Also, it'll put the files where you want on your desktop, create a new folder with the artist and album name and will lookup the track titles on the internet, so they are all ready named for you (in the format you choose).

Windows Media Player 10 will do this... it does it quick... and the best thing is it's free!

WMP on the PPC is OK. I use PocketMusic, though. Sound Quality thru speaker is not that good, but if you plug an adaptor from the headphone socket to, say, car tape player the quality is actually very good.
