Finally took the plunge and invested in a Mitac Mio 168 and Copilot 5 maps. Took it out on a test drive and it worked brilliantly. I'm absolutely thrilled!!! I was a bit concerned about the Republic of Ireland map quality as it is not yet finished and hardly anyone knew about the road structure to give any advice. Well, for anyone interested in using Copilot 5 maps in Ireland, here's a list of what is covered.

All the 'M' roads are covered. (Motorways)
All the 'N' roads are covered (National)
All the 'R' roads are covered (Rural) These are like roads going across country linking villages and towns to each other.

The M and N roads are pretty well signposted, so you shouldn't really get lost. But R roads are completely different. There aren't that many roadsigns for these and there are loads of roads going everywhere. I personally think that having all the R roads on the GPS is a godsend.

The areas that are covered down to Street Level are:

Dublin
Dun Laoghaire
Bray
Greystones
Waterford
Cork
Limerick
Galway

The above seem to be completely mapped. A lot of other major towns such as: Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Killarney, etc, seem to have a good structure at the moment for navigating round the town, but a lot of the residential streets seem to be missing. I found that in Kilkenny, for example, the residential streets are mostly marked on the map but it is only a very small line indicating that it is a street. Basically looking at the map you can turn into a particular residential street but you can only go about 10 metres and you've come to the end. Obviously the rest of the bendy windy street has yet to be added. Some of the streets have been named and some haven't. Looking at the review of Ireland on this website, the rest of it will be mapped to 100% sometime during 2005.

Hopefully this information will be of some use to people with questions about the quality of mapping in the Rep. of Ireland.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, Garmin's City Select Europe maps are even more up to date. Having used both, I think the Garmin is a far better Sat Nav system than CoPilot too. 8O

They have an online map viewer at:
