Why would the system that I have provide one route for going outwards, and when I check the ' return' box in the routing wizard give me another route?

Both are reasonable routes, although the outgoing is preferable.

I have another question which I am posting as a sepearete query.
Is doing this (two posts) 'good' practice? ... or should I ask both in the same post? ... for future reference ... I do not know what the protocol is on Forums. .. many thanks

If you've got two different questions, one question per thread can be less confusing, but it's really up to you.

The "return" check box merely flips over the start and destination points before running the route calculation.

In common with most if not all navigation software, TomTom Navigator plans the route from start to finish - this is because of factors such as one way streets. Sometimes the routing algorithm throws up different outbound and return routes without any obvious reason.

If you want to influence the routing, you can use "drive by" points as part of an Itinerary.
