I bought the new Aldi GPS PDA package last Thursday and set everything up fine.

I was trying it out over the weekend to check it out and to compare it to the previous Aldi package.

Driving home last night and the PDA battery went flat. (I was running it on battery not from the car ciggy lighter).

I didn't expect to have a problem so just put it on the docking stand overnight to charge.

Turned it on this morning and it did a HARD RESET!!
All installed software (well only the navi s/w actually for now) was gone.
This can't be right can it? It's supposed to be a portable device!

Anyway, reinstalled the software and all looked ok, until I removed it from the dock. The PDA almost immediately complained of a empty battery, then turned off.

The charge light is green but it will not stay on!!

Any ideas??

A Pocket PC requires battery power to maintain its main memory, as it's RAM. That might have explained the first hard reset - because, at your own admission, you ran the battery flat. It's best to connect to power in car, not least because you can then keep the device on indefinitely on maximum backlight and not have to worry about the battery life.

What I don't understand is why the subsequent hard reset. It may be the device has some kind of battery switch that you've turned off - otherwise, I think the diagnosis may be hardware failure.

Sprite Backup has saved me more than once. It has an option to do an automatic backup when your batteries drop below a certain point.
