I have had a PPC250 since April with no problems, then in the summer I damaged it beyond repair and got another one. Now the replacement has twice gone completly flat (battery) and lost all of the software that needs to be installed for the GPS to run the GPS e.g. the mapping and POI Warner. I have been through all the options and can't figure out why the thing is just not switching off and 'hibernating' till I next want to use it. It used to last over a weekend easily with no charge.

The only differance is that I have paid for the subscrption to POI Warner now and so have downloaded virtually all the POIs from Warners - does this use more juice - can't understand why?

If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Cheers

There could be many reasons, applications running in the background etc. Don't forget that PocketPC's never fully turn off, when you power off they simply suspend but still consume battery power although you should expect 4-5 days in this supsended state before it drains completely.

The best advice is to soft reset before switching off, this will unload all applications that may be running in the background. Then monitor to see if the situation improves. if it does then we know it's a rogue app causing the problem, if not then perhaps your system has a hardware issue.

The best advice is to make sure you use it at least once a week, either in the car or putting it on the cradle, for an hour or more. I put mine on the cradle to update my POI speed camera database every friday.

I did forget once and it went completely flat in two weeks. On turning on it went through the annoying Pocket PC hard reset procedure (I know how to cut and paste after the millionth time Evil or Very Mad ) and it had lost all the software. I put it on the cradle, swapped the storage card with the spare one I keep backups on, and started to restore the software. However at this point it crashed, and on reseting just displayed a black screen with "Firmware corrupted" on it. No amount of soft reset or removing the battery would cure this, which was rather worrying and I was getting ready to call support to say it had died.

But I decided to just leave it charging for a few hours first, after I performed one last reset, and it started ok! I was then able to restore the backups from the storage card. The problem was that the PDA always runs from the battery even when connected to the power supply, which only charges the battery. However if both main and backup batteries are completely flat, the charger cant bring the voltage up enough to fully power the PDA when under load, so it will crash and may not even be able to access its firmware properly.

So if you've run it down completely, as soon as you discover this by seeing the initial screen after the hard reset, turn it off and charge it up for an hour before attempting to use it again.

Cheers
