Is there a way to combine the Western European maps?

I find it crazy that you have to swap over to another map once you reach a border.
I live in Geneva, and often cross the border to France. I find it a little annoying that you have to manually switch the maps over.

What is even more annoying is that the CH version includes a combination map of Switzerland (100%) Austria (100%) and Southern Germany.

Meaning that if you go over the border, or browse the maps without switching.

What I would like to be able to do is have Switzerland and Southern France combined. Unfortunately the 11-12 files that the installation creates all have the same name for each map. Thus you can't combine them manually.

Is there a way to hack it so that it works?

Anyone tried?

Confused

i agree its a bit inconvenient. I wonder if the maps of the US are installed as 1 big map, or several smaller maps that have to be switched as you cross into a new state. The maps of all of Europe must be about the same size as the US

It's a major disadvantage I feel. Especially for those of us who live in the smaller EU countries!! Laughing

I can't even setup a journey from where I live to a small village just over the border in France!!

This I feel should be something that the Tomtom crew should put as one of their top priorities after ironing out any stability issues.

The US version comes with six chunks for the mainland. Same problem here - you need to change maps manually or use the major roads map (which doesn't even know ZIP codes...)

Maybe the problem lies in the fact that the go only has 32mb of RAM.

I suspect it can't handle it... (in the present software environment)

No, that's not the reason. Maps are not loaded into RAM, they are used directly from storage.

It's a licensing issue - more complete maps cost more money

it's linux OS, or based on so it's only a matter of time before either some group of enthusiasts hacks it or Tomtom take note and adapt the software themselves...

this is a real shame that it operates in this manner.

QUESTION:

If I install major roads of Europe then will it allow me to plan my journey over the border? Without switching maps?

if you're crossing from Switzerland into France a lot this website might be of use. It lists all the fixed French radar, and if you download the tomtom.zip file you can copy it onto your tomtom and be warned when you're approaching a radar. Its the same approach as installing the UK speed cameras mentioned on this forum.

Linux has nothing to do with this issue. The map format is not open source, but a closely guarded secret of the vendors.

The only workaround for automatic map switching would be the SDK, but that doesn''t help you with the routing across maps.
