TomTom One map upload problems

I am having trouble putting new maps on TomTom One. I had the UK + IE maps originally. I downlaoded the US map (Inotice they took the money pretty promptly!). I already had a 1GB SD card. So I copied over the original maps and downloaded the US map onto the same card. When I look at the explorer on Home it looks like the US map is there, but how can I check that the map is actually working? When I turn the TomTom on it reverts to the UK map??
Am I doing something very daft here?

I don't know if the ONE is the same, but on my GO I would need to Change Preferences ... Manage Maps ... Switch Map to the US one. After you've done, remember to switch back to UK map.

Also, having changed to the US map, you won't get it showing on the normal navigation screen until you are actually there (because the TT is trying to show you where you are now); but if you go to "Browse map", it should show up.
