BT GPSmart power

I've had a BT GPSmart for about a year.

I recently bought a USB flash card reader that came with a USB A-B type plug. Goodie, I thought, I know the Fortuna cable is special but I'm pretty sure I read that if you just want to power it from USB then any old cable should do.


Unfortunately... it doesn't seem to work :-(. If I plug it into my car I get nothing at all, and on my laptop I remember getting a dim weak red power LED and no display.

I can't think why the USB cable I have would be 'special', but I'm also reluctant to go out and buy yet another cable that may not work....

any ideas?

I have a GPSSmart and my power cable just seems to be one of these USB-to-Cigarette-Lighter-Adaptor thingies. Works fine.

hmm - will have to have a look with a multimeter tonight..
