Hi,

Ive managed to get myself an iPaq 3870 and an Emtac GPS Jacket for £130; I'm now after routing software. I've looked at SmartST V2 (£70), TomTom 3 (£100) and Mapopolis (£70); all seem to have their strengths and weaknesses. Which would be the best for my setup?

Thanks,

Austin.

The 3780 is powerful enough to run any of them. You'll need to reveal more of your preferences (and your location) for us to be able to advise

I'm in the UK and will use the GPS almost always in the UK - possibly some driving in France. I've made a list of my preferences:

- can be used without the stylus in normal operation
- clear on-screen directions
- clear voice guidance
- custom POIs (the speed cameras!)
- 3D mapping would be good but not essential
- good map coverage
- postcode address lookup
- good routing algorithm
- automatic re-calculation of route if wrong turn taken

Thanks,

Austin.

There are many to choose from so based on your wish I would choose between
CoPilot, TomTom and Navman (v3)

- can be used without the stylus in normal operation
Co Pilot and TomTom have graphical user interfaces with large icons
- clear on-screen directions
It's fair to say the three major players fair well here but Co Pilot has the advantage of full direction and turn information visible on screen.
- clear voice guidance
It's fair to say the three major players fair well here too.
- custom POIs (the speed cameras!)
Co Pilot, TomTom and as of next month Navman all have the ability to use custom POIs
- 3D mapping would be good but not essential
All three have 3D (perspective) view
- good map coverage
Co Pilot has the edge here with NAVTEQ maps whereas TomTom and Navman use TeleAtlas.
- postcode address lookup
If you want full postcode searching then TomTom is your choice with the addition of 3rd party postcode program written specifically for it.
- good routing algorithm
Hard to say which is the best on this one.
- automatic re-calculation of route if wrong turn taken
All the major players have this feature.

With CoPilot and TomTom you also have Traffic Update Service or TMC which notifies you of any traffic incidents or general traffic jams for any given journey via GPRS and a suitably connected mobile phone. Unfortunately this feature didn't make it into Navman's Smart STv3

I have decided to go with CoPilot Live 5. Where's the cheapest place to buy it? Cheapest so far is £135...

Thanks for all your help,

Austin.
