Problem with TomTom3

I got my new TomTom3 today, loaded it into my Packard Bell 2030 PDA and it worked instantly. Very pleased with it, almost.....

It seems to be rather unreliable in that it loses the satellite almost instantly. It reckons it's got 5 connections, but when I drive off it locks up.

What I think might be the problem is that the cigar lighter feed in the vehicle (Freelander) is noisy. I bought a radar detector recently and after plugging it in to the cigar lighter it has a loud buzz running at the engine frequency. This made the detector completely unusable. Maybe there's a problem with the vehicles 12v regulation or something.

Anyone else suffer this sort of problem and have an answer?
