|
|
I'm really confused about my SD memory.
I've been told by Tomtom that I need to have a memory card with 10MB/sec reading speed.
I have a 512MB Kingston SD card.
Kingston have confirmed to me that the reading speed on this card is only 2MB/s.
What do I do!?
I have the option of sending back to the place where I got the memory from.
I originally had a Sandisk that was made in China.
Tomtom told me that SD cards from China had problems and that I should return and get one made in Europe, Japan or USA.
They ONLY mentioned China (and Taiwan) as being bad places for Sandisk.
They did not mention any other makes.
Previously on these forums, I have read that Kingston memory is OK for use with Tomtom.
So, I went for a Kingston SD card. When I got it, it came up as being made in Taiwan.
I'm really really confused.
Does anyone know which memory cards have a read speed of 10MB/sec?
(I know that the Kingston Ultra SD cards have this speed, but I can't find where they sell them. And I'm sure they will be much more highly priced.)
Any feedback wouldbe appreciated.
Thanks.

So have you tried the SD card, is it very slow, how long to plan a route from Lands end to John O'groats.....?
I have a lexar 32x SD card and am very pleased with it. I also did not have any problems with an Intergral SD card. I must admit my Sandisk CF card was very slow, but this is 1MB/s.
Check out e-bay, the speeds are usually advertised on there, if you need to buy, I would recommend buzzlghtyrby, they get sent from the USA - very good price. |

Erm... well this might sound silly... but I'm not having any problems with the SD memory card!
I'm just confused because of the advice given by Tomtom!
When is the reading speed most important... during the planning phase or during the navigation? _________________ iPaq 3870

If it works OK, don't change it!
I have a Fujifilm card which said made in Japan on the packaging, but Made in Taiwan printed on the card - didn't see that until I had opened the packet. But it works fine with TTN3 so I kept it.

that sounds like sound advice.
but i' still vexed at tomtom.
i've only given a summary of the info they gave me.
they've actually been inconsistent with the advice they have given.

The time you need a fast card is in the planning, and when TT is calculating a route. If you have a slow card this can take ages. You also notice it if you go off route and TT tries to calculate a new route.
Try a route fom Lands end to J o'G, if it takes 1.5 mins to the map view, then that is good, if it takes 5 mins then it is bad.
Give you some idea.......

well... i tried... and......... it took 5 minutes near enough.
i'd always put that down to the fact that my pocket pc is an ipaq 3870 - i.e. a bit older so a bit slower.
i also have an ipaq 1940... (with the same sd memory in) that seems to be much faster?
anyway... do you think it's worth me getting another sd memory card?
if so... what brand should i get? _________________ iPaq 3870

I have an iPAQ 2210 with a Dane-Elec XS Card that I got from Expansys. Benchmarks put the card at about 9Mb/s
Doing the Lands End to John O Groats test took exactly 59 seconds to calculate the route and display the route overview.
The card is this one: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=113405 and costs £34.95 inclusive of VAT _________________ Rgds,

It is interesting that TomTom specified the card read speed as that high. The more recent PDAs hardware (not application) is only capable of read speeds between 15-20 Megabits per second which is less than 2.5 Megabytes per second.
Having a superfast card is not going to make much difference in the current PDAs.
There could be a performance benefit whilst in a card reader. |

i've been thinking... i may not make a trip from lands end to john ogroates.
but i will be doing london to manchester or to edinburgh.
i'm concerned that if i deviate from the planned route that it will take half an hour to recalculate!?
maybe i should get another sd card?
but which one?
i remember reading somewhere on these boards that i should always get good make sd cards and that non name ones could prove to be faulty or not good enough when used with a pda for gps navigation??
still confused.
i don't understand why the answer isn't simple? _________________ iPaq 3870

erm... that's what i've already got!
as mentioned above, kingston have told me that the card has a read speed of 2MB/s.
and as mentioned above... Tomtom have said this is too slow and have recommended a minimum read speed of 10MB/s.
BUT, thanks for the link.
that's the first place i've found selling high speed memory.
what i don't understand is: don't the rest of u have the same problem!!
OR is it the case that Tomtom have supplied me with rubbish info? _________________ iPaq 3870

Sorry, the Kingston price was posted for the benefit of 'sland'.
If you search the forums you will see the two ingredients that lead to problems with SD memory is 'Sandisk' and 'China'
SD memory that is neither of the above is generally OK. _________________ Ian.
