In what seems like a never-ending push to fill as many of our roads with speed cameras, another major UK road is set to have point-to-point devices installed.
This time it's the turn of the 50mph northbound carriageway on the A3 in Surrey.
The average speed cameras will be part of a major improvement scheme that will see slip roads either side of the Guildford and Godalming Bypass widened and extended.
Highways England said: "Speeding vehicles and incidents on this busy downhill section of road are widely acknowledged issues. Average speed cameras should help to make the road safer by reducing congestion caused by incidents and also smooth out traffic flow."
They added: "Average speed cameras have been shown to encourage a better level of compliance with speed limits over long distances. They can also have a traffic calming effect as vehicle speeds tend to be more consistent and reduced the need for heavy braking."
A local resident disagrees: "We knew they were going to be introducing these changes and it is not going to improve the problem. It makes it worse as there will be smaller gaps between vehicles. It is a move in the right direction, but there will be smaller gaps and cars will end up rear-ending each other. Vehicles travelling on that stretch of road, going past the junction, should be travelling at 50mph anyway. I invite anybody to pull out of the junction and tell me it is safe." _________________ Robert Brady |

Agreed.
Probably one of the Surrey expensive car mob who thinks they are better drivers than anyone else.
I used to work near the A3 blackspot and barely a week went by without office colleagues reporting delays due to 'another accident'. _________________ DashCam:

I am sorry but I disagree. I used to drive to Putney and work around Kingston, Wandsworth and Merton when they introduced a 50 mph limit from Hook up to the Robin Hood Roundabout.
Trying to get onto the A3 from one of the sliproads was always a nightmare after that as the gap between cars had reduced. If there was a gap you had to get your speed bang on to be able to slide into it. The number of accidents did increase although there were more minor ones. However a lane out at 7.00 am is still a lane out. |

Which demonstrates the lack of courtesy and driving standards these days.
If you're stuck at 50mph average speed then it's not rocket science to leave a reasonable gap, especially when approaching a joining intersection and allow vehicles to 'zip' in.
I do.
Still, if others want to suck in vehicle fumes by tailgating, being selfish and getting nowhere ....... _________________ DashCam:
