Motorists brave enough to tackle the current wintery conditions on Britain's roads have been given a warning.
They are being advised that they risk a fine of £1,000 if they fail to clear snow from their number plates before driving away.
It's illegal to drive with your number plate obscured, no matter what it is that's obscuring it, as speed cameras (and of course police officers) are unable to properly identify a speeding vehicle if the registration number is covered.
Even after the snow melts from the plate, the risk still remains from the residue of dirt thrown up from slush on the road.

My van is on the driveway with the front end black all over - just one day after I paid £10 to a hand car wash place to have it sparkling from top to toe!
I wonder if we can claim compensation from the highways Agency for cleaning (and fines) after they have failed to clear the naughty snow off the roads? _________________ Dennis

By the wording, all you have to say is that it was clean when you set out.
Cars with no boot get a dirty plate in no time with this weather. _________________ Satnav:

Funny, the back of my van is fairly clean, just the front you can't tell where the road ends and the van starts! _________________ Dennis

Funny thing is any number of posh cars these days that have windscreen wipers for the headlights, but not for the number plates. So many of them seem to take pride in having illegibly dirty plates. _________________ Dennis

I got pulled many years ago driving a double decker in filthy conditions. They complained the number plate couldn't be read and that I had to clean it, problem was the plate was 10' in the air. They couldn't offer me a solution as to how I should do it at the roadside, so I was allowed on my way. A clean vehicle leaving in the morning, I can't be expected to stop every half hour, get out steps and clean it, would never get anywhere!!
