|
|
I have used in the past the Speed Camera database in my Nuvi with no problems at all. Now with my new Driveluxe 51 I think I see the camera icons on the maps but I get no warnings either tone or voice.
I am using ( I think) the correct settings for Garmins but no luck. I also use the SD Card and not the internal memory ( so is that the problem?)
Please advise if anyone has a similar problem. |

I do hope Garmin haven't scuppered third party cameras. _________________ DashCam:

Card shouldn't be an issue but is the file in Garmim/POI on the card? If it is but still not working try in the POI folder on the device just to check. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Hi.
Yes, that was the first thing I tried. I have a horrible feeling that third party (pocketgpsworld) have been nobbled! I tried some other POI's from other well known sites and the same thing happened.
Custom POI's have always been allowed on Garmin units so what is going on?
PS
Do you remember me helping you with the 'locales' file, well that's disappeared from the new generation of units. |

Just got off the phone to Garmin.
Bad news! All new models of Navigators will not allow the use of third party speed camera databases.
They will only allow their own.
This is very serious and basically means I will have to return the unit for a full refund as 'not fit for purpose'. |

Bad move.
No more new Garmins for me then.
I will also not update the firmware on my current ones until I know they don't nobble existing devices as well. _________________ DashCam:

I'm thinking about the fact that TomTom say they accept third party POIs (but "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it") |

That indeed would be a retrograde step, but I think we need more information before we assume the obvious. If true though I'll be sticking with a nuvi for a while longer! _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

The Garmin 51 manual still mentions proximity alerts and has the same wording as the old 50 manual.
Neither manual mentions POIloader though but we know it works on the 50. _________________ DashCam:

The fact that POILoader works is irrelevant in my opinion.
I found that indeed it does work by loading the Speed Database on either internal memory or SD card. What has been disabled is the units ability to recognise when approaching a camera and so make a sound or a voice file alert.
The tech. man made it very clear that this was a conscious decision by Garmin to only promote their own Cyclops system and to inhibit the use of any third party systems. |

What about third party (custom) POIs?
Wold you be able to display PGPSW camera database on map and navigation screens for reference but use CamerAlert for actual warnings?
TomTom went all silly with third party (custom) POIs a few years ago. I was hoping that I could jump ship to Garmin to use my POIs but this development looks like I may need to reconsider whether Garmin is the right way for me to go.

Hmmm ... wouldn't be the first time that Garmin staff had been inaccurate with their comments, are you able to (if you still have your nuvi) load a known working file from your nuvi to the POI folder on your Drive to see if that works, since this would eliminate most other possibilities.
This http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/creating_custom_poi_files.jsp certainly implies Drive models should be capable of giving audio and visual alerts. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I have had some success with other POI's such as Level Crossings etc. (with sound) but it is only speed cameras that are disabled. |

The @ sign and various words such as Gatso, SPECS etc. according to the Garmin link above.
If they have changed it, a bit of experimentation as to whether its the @ sign or the name of the file/POI will determine how it now works (or doesn't). |
