A316 average speed cameras go live on Monday 13th June

The installation of new average speed cameras on the A316 in London were completed last month. The new cameras will be activated on Monday 13th June.

The The Home Office approved Siemens SafeZone cameras are being installed as part of a TfL contract to replace existing wet film cameras on four selected routes. The A40 went live in October last year and the A406 and A2 will be activated later this summer.

The system operates 24/7 in all weather conditions with each camera able to monitor two lanes of traffic and can identify the registration, make, model and colour of vehicles in all light conditions with average speed calculated over a measured distance within the speed enforcement zone.

We have them in the submission map but the last time I looked they hadn't been activated so not in the download yet.

Unfortunately decorating has got in the way of me getting out there to verify them.

Given they are to be activated can we activate them pending verification?

1) I've noticed that the "tick" roadmarking that gives the datum point for these new cameras can be different for different locations. Usually it's a plain "tick", but for instance the last one going westbound out of London just before the start of the M3 has a double line added - is that to indicate it's the last camera, I wonder? If so, it's a useful visual clue. I haven't clocked the other ones yet.

2) The A316 is a mish-mash of 50, 40 and 30 mph zones, so I can't work out how They are going to measure the averages. The fact that the eastbound 30 mph monitron camera remains in situ is interesting - does it suggest the 30 zone is not part of the scheme? I wonder, in fact, if the A316 scheme is actually a collection of individual pairs of cameras, and not an overall end-to-end (Hogarth-M3) scheme? As with other schemes, this one cannot "see" vehicles joining the A316, speeding as much as they like and leaving the A316 before the next camera, as I don't think the side roads are camera'd (is that a verb...?;)

My guess is that they are indeed programmed camera to camera. Like the A40 and A406 (western ave and north circular) there are loads of joining points.

Once you have passed one camera they know how long it takes to get to the next one, even when the speed changes mid cameras. Beat the time and get a prize in the post.

This week isn't looking good for a clear dashcam run, significant rain forecast every day so hopefully the week after.

From info supplied (by Spacedman) I'll join at the Costco roundabout at Sunbury and go all the way to Kew bridge. If there are loads of speed changes I'll probably have to do a return run to get all the speed signs recorded as well.

Once logged I can work out if the cameras are cleverly sited or whether we need some dummy entries if the limit changes mid camera pair.
