Apologies if this has been reported already, but I don't remember seeing it here.
Florida studies find red light cameras cause accidents
“Rather than improving motorist safety, red-light cameras significantly increase crashes and are a ticket to higher auto insurance premiums, researchers at the University of South Florida College of Public Health conclude."
"Attempts to generate revenue through traffic citations are directly contrary to public safety. Cities and counties install red light cameras as a “hidden tax” on motorists. RLCs are a new revenue stream for government and those companies that produce RLCs"

There is a risk in generalising, but that has never stopped me. I think a major part of driving is predicting what other road users might do. The more skilled/experienced the driver, the more prediction options The driver considers. Many of us tend to make only one or two predictions. Cameras introduce an element of unpredictability, though we have discussed them enough here for most to be aware that we need to be ready for some drivers to react extremely, with speed limit cameras many brake hard, some brake and swerve into other lanes. Similarly with RLC it is probably as well to anticipate that there will be drivers who brake even when the lights remain green, and others will brake hard on amber, when they might otherwise have proceded.
I don't think the research will mean a reduction in the number of cameras, but it is a warning to drivers that approaching a camera requires vigilance. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

The problem is that Speed Cameras & RLCs are a huge income stream, so they're here to stay, regardless of whether they're seen to be causing accidents. Statistics can, in any case, be manipulated to support whichever side you're on. _________________ Galaxy Note 4 / TomTom GO : CamerAlert : CoPilot |
