Hi all, I would like to have the possibility to use my laptop as a sat nav, but I am totally new to this, and I am not sure how the whole thing works. I assume there are usb receivers out there, so I wonder if any body can give me more info on it.
1)if I buy the receiver, is the software included?
2) Is there any open source, reliable, free mapping system that can be installed on the laptop and that works with the gps receiver?
3)is the receiver expensive?
4)I need something that doesn't require an internet connection to work
thanks

There are plenty of GPS Receivers for Pcs available for around £25-30.
Try Googling "GPS Receiver for PC" or searching Amazon for "GPS Dongle".
The mapping software won't normally be included.
You won't be able to use Google maps etc. as that needs an internet connection, so you would need to have some navigation software installed that would include the maps. I can't help you with that one, I'm afraid.
One final thing though.... Where would you PUT the laptop?
If you just leave it on the seat beside you it will be dangerous to keep looking sideways and down at it, and if you somehow fix it to the dashboard, it's one hell of a heavy weight to start flying round the cabin if you're in an accident! _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-)
Autoroute will use a GPS dongle, but it is not a navigation aid but more a positional aid, there was some navsats for the PC a couple of years ago, not sure if still supported tho. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8
