Hi, I've bought a city map of Florence for an upcoming visit. I'll be on foot and I have a very good external battery for another device, but the connection to it is USB with a 12v output. I'm loath to buy another power pack so I would need a 12v usb to 5v usb converter (ignoring the other problem of the sat nav connection which is a separate issue).
I know I could create some sort of Heath Robinson solution using a car plug in converter but I'd rather a more tidy dolution.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Something like This should do the trick for the portable power but you will need to sort out the lead that goes from the pack to the devices micro USB socket otherwise it will make the Garmin think it's connected to a PC and go in to USB drive/ PC connected mode, will be fine for charging the unit but not while you are using it for navigation - Mike |

As an aside, I've never heard of anything with a USB connection with a 12Volt output/input. AFAIK that goes against the USB spec. What's the unit? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

The battery is an "Anypower" battery charger for powering a portable bullet videocam. Perhaps it's a dedicated product, I don't know. |

Just checking that we are on the same track. As said above USB standard is 5v. Did you mean that you charge the battery from a 12v source using a cigar lighter plug with a USB connection to the battery pack? If so, it may well be that the input/output from the USB is 5v - have you checked it with a voltmeter? 12v will fry your Garmin. However, even if the voltage is 5v you will still need a USB to micro or mini that is wired like a Garmin charger and will stop the unit going into PC mode. Search this forum for solutions to that. |

To clarify, the battery pack is charged from the mains via a plug-in transformer. The output from the battery pack is 12v via a USB connection so is a non standard output to power a bullet video cam.
Bastardising a 12v garmin/generic car plug in is something I've thought of already, but even then it may still have to plug into the car connection unit that the gGarmin clips on to in the ca. I just wondered is there were tidier solutions. I might just get a 5v power pack as suggested and keep switching between powering/charging and use. With only a week or so to go there is a time issue.
Many thanks for all your replies. |
