Do specs cameras need light to read number plates or do they use infra red (or similar)? I ask because specs i have seen in the past at night have bright lights just before the camera. I assumed this was to illuminate the number plates so they could be read. However, of the new specs on the m27, only 1 of them has the lights. The other 2 in the 'pair of 3' are in complete darkness. Does this mean they are not working or can they still read number plates? |

As far as I know from reading forums here, the Specs do not need lighting, they use infra red (or similar).
I've seen the bright lights as ell, I assumed they wre to either light up a dark bit of the road, or illuminate a sign with the speed limit on it or similar.
Also having just driven up the M4 about 3 hours ago, I think the Specs there were surrounded in darkness!! No white light to be seen near them.
So, who's to say?

My understanding was that the 2 round objects to the left and right of the camera were infra-red floods. _________________ Jock
