I realise this may have been asked many times but a search of the forums shows it may not have been asked very recently.
I have a TT 910 which I've been very happy with but is now playing up. I was planning to buy a new top-ish end one with live traffic but I am now thinking about a phone-based option instead. This is because I could use a new phone's data contract to pay for the traffic info.
What I need is:
1. option of live traffic
2. road names/numbers included in spoken instructions
3. support for pgpsw speed camera database including ability to specify the words spoken (so I can include the speed limit in the warning)
4. something less bulky than my 910 so I can fit it in my pocket
5. European and other maps (South Africa would be good)
I do like the idea of Google maps -- free, regularly maintained, easy search, etc -- but if I can't get road names/numbers included in messages AND speed camera database support then I'll stick with a TomTom.
Can anyone recommend an appropriate solution for me? Thanks! |

I've been doing some more research on this. It seems:
1. the phone-based solutions don't offer full postcode addressing, TTS, etc
2. the latest TT devices omit POIs such as our dearly loved PocketGPSWorld camera database
So it seems the best option is a previous-generation x50. I'm torn between 750 and 950 but prices are so close it's probably worth going for the 950. |

Hi, sorry you've not had any answers to your original post so far....

I don't know about #1, but you are definitely wrong about #2. That WAS the situation, but support for third-party POIs was added a couple of months ago.
Having said that, apart from the faster routing calculation, I don't think there's much to recommend the new models over a Go950. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Have a look at an iPhone combined with the TomTom app, it does include spoken road names and postcode address etc, and will support the Speed Camera Database from this site.
Don't forget to factor in the cost of a powered car holder though as you want the phone where you can see it and it needs power as running GPS based apps on the iPhone will flatten the battery rather quickly if no external power is available.
Each region is supplied as a seperate map app, South Africa, North America, Western_Europe or more regional specific such as UK&ROI.
The Live services including the HD Traffic are cheaper on the iPhone as you bear the cost of the data which is part of your phone contract, the main advantage has been the updates which each time have included a new map at no additional cost (no way of knowing how long this will continue though) - Mike |
