I am in the market for a new sat nav.
It **must**
Be able to itinary plan, ie, i add 20 postcodes and it calculates the best route to get to all of them in the shortest time/mileage.
Be able to support 3rd party POI's. Specifically PGPSW speedcam database.
I dont need europe/usa maps.
I dont need any of the live or otherwise services.
I dont need bluetooth
I would prefer tomtom but have had a good experience with garmin on my n8.
Money no object...
Suggestions please?????
Thanks.. |

I have moved this thread to where it will be viewed by users of various devices rather than the TomTom specific forum.
No TomTom or Garmin can offer the ability to enter multiple postcodes and perform route optimisation, in fact its quite rare to find any any units - Mike |

Hi...
Is this not how itinarey planning works?? By inputting a start. end and all the points inbetween you want to visit? |

Itinerary Planning will take you from A to B to C etc but only in the same specific order you enter each waypoint, the device will simply calculate a route via each point, it will not optimise the route - Mike |

I've been looking at the Garmin 2360LT with a view to buying one. The spec for this has "Auto sort multiple destinations (provides most direct route): "
Is this not what the OP wants?

And the Garmin 14xx series will also optimise a route, and can easily accept 20 plus stops, I do it all the time on mine |

for better or worse i've plumped for a tomtom 1005.
After reading numerous reviews, nearly all are praising the hardware and slating the software (nothing new there) but with each incarnation, more bugs appear to get fixed....So, fingers crossed that itinary planning is coming soon... TT!!!
Thanks for all the input...

Odd choice?
You said in your first post that "optimised" itinerary planning was an absolute **must**.
The Go1005 doesn't even have "ordinary" (A to B to C) itinerary planning yet and is very unlikely to get anything cleverer than that. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

There's nothing rational about purchases - otherwise all the Ad Agencies would go out of business. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

I have read several reports that the feature is coming soon to the top of the line tomtoms.
I know it goes against everything i've ever said about tomtom and their attitude towards their customers, But, it IS a very nice unit....
Also, i have been a Tomtom customer since the year dot and i am very familiar with the interface.
So, Tomtom, stay good to your word!!!!!
Now i just have to work out why my nokia N8 wont bluetooth to it!!! |

Well, after much messing around and speaking to Tomtom themselves it has become apparent that the N8 is compatible for the 1005 but the 1005 isnt compatible with the N8. So either way i'm screwed....No bluetooth...
Now its becoming apparent that what others have said about tomtom taking one step forward and two steps back actually has a ring of truth about it.
So, sussamb and neilritchie, thanks for the alternatives as the tomtom is now going to have to work hard to prove its worth before its returned to halfords.. |

WARNING!! Halfords have a nasty habit of saying you can't return it for a refund ("Because it's a SatNav, or something, it is not included in our 28 day returns policy" - they even print that on their receipt. DO NOT accept that rubbish from them. If it doesn't do what it is supposed to do (and if it says Bluetooth handsfree somewhere), make them give you your money back. It CAN be done - I've done it several times myself, even in some cases taking a TomTom device back to a different branch from where I bought it! _________________ Dennis

From the PGPSW website itself.
Advanced Features
Trip Planner:
The 3790T has a useful Trip Planner. This allows multi-point routing and the option to optimise the points in-between your start and destination." |

Well, i phoned TomTom and explained. Even the support assistant commented that itinary planning and the new software was a huge problem as loads of truckers, taxi drivers, delivery drivers etc had been crying out for it. She then gave me a code to give to halfords.
Now, to be fair to the bloke at halfords he was a star...Sat there on the phone as he had to phone tomtom to get an RMA for 20mins. He really was a star. Couldn't do enough to help me.
So, to the chase, i have a garmin 3760t. Within 20 seconds it was paired to the N8, first time. End of... Its an absloute gem. I'm so much more impressed with this.. Itinary planning? You bet.. Custom POI? yep! Software works?? Erm, yes again 3 out of 3 so far...
So, thanks to all..... |
