I've just been given a Garmin Nuvi 1430T. It came with a power cable that plugs into the car cigarette lighter. There is also a smaller secondary cable (aerial?) that plugs into the first cable. |The system seems to work with or without the latter. Does anyone have any idea what it is for, please? |

It's the antenna for the traffic receiver (the T in the product name)
It receives data about traffic delays and then factors them into route calculations. |

That's not quite true. The receiver and antenna are built into the power cord. The extra 'wire antenna' is only necessary to help boost signals in weak areas, the traffic icon and traffic system will normally work perfectly well without the wire antenna attached. |

Indeed, the TMC receiver and antenna is built into the charge cable and the antenna extension is optional. Use only if you have reception issues with TMC Traffic Data. _________________ Darren Griffin |
