Not me the Tom-Tom -- and only as we can tell in one place..

We have my wife and I the 750L and the 740L respectively..

We have no problems with the activity --In fact it is good --

The problem --
When I ask my Tom-Tom the weather it asks if I want my location or destination and depending on what I say it will seek and display and then Read out loud - the weather forecast.
That is great --- NO Problems..

However when I ask my location it seeks out and displays the screen with map and words
-- but does NOT read out loud the location.

When on holiday last year It did do this with good enunciation of the places etc
-- even when on the mountain road of France
-- but for some reason it seems to have stopped doing it now..

Has the latest update taken away this useful facility??

Not really an essential item -- but was nice or fun to have..

Maurice

Are you referring to the
Help Me...
Where am I?
I too get the weather spoken. But I have never used the "Where am I?" function so I have no knowledge of previous performance. Right now it displays the map and a text window with my location in words and the Coordinates, but nothing spoken. That's on my GO550 Live, Navcore 9.058.

Yes -- we often used the spoken "Where am I?" function -- not through real need -- but as a bit of fun .. And that is what it is about - isn't it...?

To have the voice tell you your location when on a mountain road "somewhere" in the Pyrenees is quite good -- or was quite good.
It worked well in the UK also and often was a talking point when showing our passengers the uses of Tom-tom, and all the services that could be provided by voice control alone.

I suppose that it could be useful in an emergency if phoning the emergency services to be able to transmit the location to them over the phone??
But it seems to have gone??

or has it?
Has any one else got the "Where am I" voice instructions
Maurice

Does that model have a 'speech preferences' option and, if so, what choices are selected?

I'm afraid Voice Preferences don't do it David. There are two pages of such and whilst one of them is Read aloud Weather, there isn't one which might relate to "Where am I?". I've just ticked and enabled everything I can see, but still don't get the Where am I? Anybody klnow where I can download and install previous Navcores for 550 and I'll try them all to see where it's gone?

I can confirm that it USED to read out the "Where am I" details, but the feature was removed on a software update (somewhere around or before Feb 2010).

This was confirmed to me by a TomTom employee, but I couldn't get a reason from him WHY they did it.

I can't work out from your first post what software versions you have on each machine (I took a while working out even who owns what and which one doesn't speak!), but it sounds like you have EARLIER software on the 950 somehow?

Can you spell it out again in simple terms? Something like:

Go940 - software Vx.xxx - Reads out "where am I" Yes/No
Go950 - software Vz.zzz - Reads out "where am I" Yes/No

They don't have either of those Andy, I guess your glasses are getting worn - shudder gone to Speckravers! Laughing
Wife = 750
Fibre = 740

He doesn't actually confirm what his wife's 750 was doing last year, or what it's doing now.

He merely says his 740 used to read out loud "Where am I?" and no longer does so.

But I have to say I assumed he meant that the same applies also to his wife's 750 (used to, but no longer).

Wife has the 740L and I have the 750L
You are correct that -
Both no longer have the voice for the "Where am I function
Both are using
Ap 9.058.568435.1

Have they gone for good or do you think that they may be restored at a later Ap??

Sadly, my experience with TomTom would suggest that unless you can raise a campaign to match the one for Brian Blessed's voice, that feature is gone for ever.

Unlikely, but "who knows" with TomTom?

When I asked the very same question they said:

Quote:
It used to read out before.
But for the time being, In the "Where am I?" screen the system DOES NOT PROMPT the displayed information.

I knew that.... Rolling Eyes
