For goodness sake. No wonder people run the red lights then If they last for that long, then how on earth are people going to know if they should stop or not? Crazy. 2 seconds is plenty. _________________ Gone fishing! |

What does a single yellow light mean in Australia?
In the UK it means one thing. STOP. Exactly the same as a red light. Not as some think stop if it's safe to do so or if you feel like it. Just Stop.
If it the same in Australia then people shouldn't be running yellows either (Amber Gamblers) therefore there shouldn't be any reason to be caught running a red. |

The highway code says"AMBER means ‘Stop’ at the stop line. You may go on only if the AMBER appears after you have crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to pull up might cause an accident" then here. So it is as some people think |

Ah well When i did my driving test and motorcycle both times it was drummed into me it meant Stop and that's it. No qualifiers or caviats. Stop was the only answer that would accepted if asked on a test. |

Did you need a man walking in front with a red flag too?
The "stop unless it's unsafe to do so" rule was what I was always taught. |

I can't imagine that if you quoted the exact wording from the Highway Code they would be allowed to fail you! |

Well, there you go. It's always been as per my previous post since I took my M/C test in about 1958 (With the red flag ) Although an unqualified 'Stop' is the safe, if not complete answer. |

Green light means GO!
Orange light means GO FASTER!
Seriously though, in Australia and New Zealand (where I'm from) an amber light means "Stop if you can", probably qualified with a bit of common sense spiel about giving due consideration to the speed of the traffic behind you etc. Obviously it would be a dumb idea to screech to a halt if you have artic bearing down on you.
In the UK it is similar, to be precise:
"the amber signal shall, when shown alone, convey the same prohibition as the red signal, except that, as respects any vehicle which is so close to the stop line that it cannot safely be stopped without proceeding beyond the stop line, it shall convey the same indication as the green signal or green arrow signal which was shown immediately before it"

I got both my licenses before 2002 and i was just going on. What inwas taught. Obviously discretion was used with regards to distances and traffic conditions but it was repeatedly drummed into if asked about a yellow light the answer was "Stop" and thats it. I guess I should have checked the HC for the modern answer. |

Ah well I don't know why three separate driving instructors taught me the same wrong thing then. |
