Converting Lat Long

I need a lot of help so I am told I have 2 excel spread sheats with over 500 locations on but the lat long format is Lat N ****.****
Long W *****.****

I need to convert these to a format that Auto Route and TomTom will recognize but getting no where fast.

Any advice would be great the most important conversion for me is to TomTom POI.

You need to remove the Lat N text before the ****.**** values and replace the Long W by a minus sign (adjacent to *****.****). If the columns are headed Latitude and Longitude respectively then importing the data into AutoRoute is easier. You will be able to select the column that contains the text that you want to use as the POI name.

You could then use my program POIConverter to read the saved AutoRoute map (.axe) file and output the information as a TTN overlay.

Many thanks for your help but converted using your rules and a lat long that is surpose to be in Lincoln ended up some where in canada. Must be me doing somthing wrong so any more advice would be great.

OK here goes

Using auto route and my knowledge limited as it is this should be at os grid
SK 94712 69304

I can see the problem. The coordinates are in degree and minutes format, ie DDMM.MMMM for latitudes and DDDMM.MMMM for longitudes. Thus in your example the decimal value is 53 + 12.7411/60 = 53.21235 for the latitude and 0 + 34.9435/60 = -0.58239 (negative for west of Greenwich) for the longitude.

This then plots correctly Thumbs Up

Thanks very much for your help just have one more question. Do you know how to convert a whole load with out having to go through one by one its a whole lot of info 2 spread sheats with over 500 enteries.

I would export the Excel file as a comma separated TXT file and use a good text editor like TextPad in block mode to reformat the file as follows

N>DD>MM.MMMM>W>DDD>MM.MMMM where > is a tab character.

Then import the file back into Excel and add a formula to calculate DD+MM.MMMM/60 etc. Dont forget to make the value negative if the longitude is W.
