|
|
iPhone owners who have upgraded to an iPhone 4 only to find their TomTom car-kit no longer works without a bodge can now rejoice.
TomTom have designed a small plastic adapter that fits over the button on the cradle. This fills the gap between the button (which needs to be pressed to activate the cradle) and the slimmer iPhone 4 thus restoring full functionality.
Existing owners can request an adapter here and all car-kits manufactured since 1st September now come with the adapter in the packaging.
Sadly, the cradle will not accommodate an iPhone in a case or the Apple bumper so you will need to remove them before you can use the cradle.

Its beyond belief that tomtom and others do not take into account in there designing of their products that most iphone users use a case of some sort on their iphone for protection and more recently for reception. Also on slightly off topic how is it Tomtom charge the same amount of money for Tomtom UK&Ireland and tomtom europe. other Satnav apps charge cheaper for just to countries and more for Europe which is fair _________________ --

Playing devils advocate here, it's far from simple to design a solution that can cater for the vast variety of case designs and types available for the iPhone.
Even Brodit's much simpler cradle designs have to be offered in a variety of versions to cater for the common types of case. And also, Apple's iPhone4 bumper has caused all manner of issues thanks to the deeply recessed sync port.
At least the iPhone 4 has much improved GPS reception and so, personally, I have no need to use the TT car-kit. Instead I use a Brodit cradle that will (with some bodging) accommodate my bumper encased iPhone 4.
TomTom should be given some points for designing a solution that allows owners to continue to use their current kit albeit with cases removed. However there are other solutions available now and the case for a car-kit with GPS is much less valid than it was when the the 3G was released. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Well i seems the Magellan Car Kit for iPhone is a very simple solution and was created before the iphone 4 came out and yet it fits in the cradle without any additional attachments and fits with the phone in almost any case so i would depute your point "it's far from simple to design a solution that can cater for the vast variety of case designs and types available for the iPhone. _________________ --

They've put masses of effort into the online form. I can't understand why they need to know my gender, or why they won't need to know which country I'm in when they post the adaptor out to me.
Oh and the serial number is so small on the cradle that I can't read the thing with the naked eye.
But still, at least they've come up with a free solution. |

I agree. I was even struggling using a magnifying glass.
You can run the TomTom Car Kit Tool app to get the serial number.

Its not just TomTom, Apple even makes accessories for the iPad that requires their own cases to be removed. |

2 weeks so far and nothing. I guess we need to continue to be patient any time TomTom are involved. |
