|
|
Hi Guys, are these USB cables all the same?
I've got one for my phone, one for my S30 3D and yadda yadda yadda.
Even my Digital cameras have one each.
Is it mix and match? _________________ VEGETARIAN

I believe the Garmin USB cable has a resistor in it so it can be recognised by the unit and it'll switch into data transfer mode. Other leads and the power don't have this. |

Not true or if it is the resistor is not required for my Nuvi 205 which functions in all respects with any standard USB cable.

I think it may be the other way round and it is the CHARGER that is non-standard for the Nuvi (or some of them).
A friend bought a "generic" USB charger for his Nuvi and it kept going into PC mode, but when he bought a Garmin one it worked fine.. |

So, if I get a Nuvi 1310 I have to get a USB charger lead and a data lead?
Cheeky sods.

No. You normally get the data lead (which also charges the unit - although slower than the main charger). The mains charger was an extra i bought.
The unit isn't designed to be used in car on the battery and should be plugged into the car charger (also supplied) when in use. |

Every Garmin i've had (3 - StreetPilot i3, 760T, 765T) came with a USB data cable which also charges the unit from the PC. The only thing is it doesn't charge as fast as the in car / mains cable. |

I'm still using a S30 3D which, like yours, came with car and USB cable.
Thanks mate.

Look, I am NOT the brightest bulb on anyones Christmas tree but I've just been to Halfords. They made me feel like Stephen Hawking
I was after the Nuvi 1310 and a headlamp bulb which had just blown on the car.
Despite the "We fit" badge he was wearing he told me they didn't fit stuff.....really. Talk of the sat nav perked him up a bit until I told him I'd decided on one, obviously one he didn't like as his mood dropped again.
He said I had to charge it for 6 hours first, which made it a long wait in the store.
We went through the fact that there was NO charger included, "you'll have to charge it in your car" FOR SIX HOURS?
I asked could I charge it via the USB and he fell into a deeper sulk as he wanted me to buy the mains charger
I had the picture in my head of the monkeys at the safari parks, the ones who lie on your bonnet and pull your wipers off.
NOW I know what they do during the week.
I'll try another branch. _________________ VEGETARIAN

Rubbish.
Besides the devices aren't designed to be used on the battery other than when you are setting up a route away from the car so you should have it plugged in at all times in the car anyway...

You can. It takes longer though. You don't need the unit fully charged all the time if you use the in car charger. It'll charge as you use it. You can use it whilst it's plugged into your PC which will also charge it. You only need the battery for the few minutes setting the unit up before you go anywhere. |

I knew most of the story because of your help in this thread but I was hoping I was dealing with a skilled spannerist as he was going to fit me bulb.
I'd rather just go out in daylight. _________________ VEGETARIAN

A skilled spannerist in ..... HALFRAUDS??? - that's the same as a vegetarian bull!
But have you tried any of your USB cables yet? If it IS charging correctly then I guess there will be a battery icon which shows that (eg a 'lightning flash' symbol rather than a 'how much power left' one)?
If you haven't I don't know if PaulB has any cautionary advice? My worry (in my ignorance) in trying other cables is that the pin settings set up in the mini-end may not be standard, like the normal sized USB connector and might make a damaging connection.
My unit goes into PC mode on my wall charger, the opposite of PaulB's - I assumed it was down to one of the pin connections in the mini-end of the USB cable that goes into the unit getting (wall charger) or not getting (car charger) a voltage from the power supply telling it which cable was connected (I once connected an incorrect car charger to a Nuvi and it thought I was connecting to the PC!). _________________ David

some of the older nuvi's DID require teh specific lead. most of the newer ones will work with any lead.
in fact most of the budget (2xx etc) nuvi's don't even come with a USB lead!
