While browsing this list of camera "type-approval" documents, I came across this one from 2000 (which seems to supercede the previous one from 1992) and which says:
Quote:
The Secretary of State... hereby makes that approval subject to the condition that devices of that type (the Gatsometer Type 24+AUS) shall be used to obtain evidence only in conjunction with the enforcement of speed limits of 30 miles per hour or above.

I wonder why?

p'raps they were found to be inaccurate at lower speeds?

are all gatso cameras the 'Gatsometer Type 24+AUS' or are there other variants? how do you tell the difference? if i got a ticket in a 20-zone how easy would it be to find out what model the gatso was? would the scp even know? would they even know him by his full name?!

As far as I know, the "Type 24" is the particular radar unit and the "AUS" is the particular camera module used in the "bog-standard" Gatso box.

There's also the Type 36, which is the one used in RedLight cameras.

Every camera is supposed to have a yearly inspection certificate issued, which you can ask for, which would say what type it was, I guess.
