|
|
Hi all...
I have a small problem with my POI files. I've got around 70 POI categories installed on a TomTom GO 720, most of which have been downloaded from this site. The PGPSW POIs all work fine.
I've also have 2 other POI categories downloaded from other sources, including the 2010 Good Beer Guide from the Camra website. These POI categories work as well, showing the correct icon and name in the POI list - however, they ALSO appear that the TOP of my POI list with a red square icon (followed by a full stop and a space). If I choose this version, no POIs are listed.
I've read about making sure that the filenames of the BMP and OV2 files are the same, and I've confirmed this (and tried changing them to 'a.bmp' and 'a.ov2', etc) without success. I've also read the the icons should be 22x22 and 8-bit BMP files - but presumably since the icons display correctly further down the POI list, this isn't the issue.
If I use the device via TomTom Home, I don't have the problem.
If I delete the POI files, the red square POIs also disappear.
I'm now at a loss! Any thoughts welcome!
cheers

The red square icons are TT's way of telling you that it can't find the BMP associated with that POI file. It sounds like you have 2 extra OV2 files in there. Can you use Windows Explorer to get a list of all the POI files in that map folder? Ask if you need help with that. _________________ Jock

Hi Jock -
Thanks for the quick reply. What's confusing is that the icon appears to be correctly associated with the POI file lower down the POI list. It's just that I have this additional red square at the top!
I've sorted all files by name to see if there are any additional OV2 files that jump out at me, but I can't see anything obvious. Every OV2 file has a corresponding BMP with no extras.
And if I deleted the two rogue POI categories, the red squares go away.
I do have a "deletedpoi.local" file if that helps?
cheers

I'm confused as to how these files are occurring! You delete them and they go from the list. Do they come back when you switch off & back on? When you update the GBG?
When you look in Explorer, are you showing hidden files? _________________ Jock

I'll leave it to MaFt to help out, as he is a Mac user, and it sounds like he knows something that will help! _________________ Jock

ok, have you ever looked at a mac's drive through windows? you get loads of 'dot files' which are temp files that mac osx uses - pretty much the same filename. OSX will treat these as hidden and you will, in general, never see them. BUT other devices (eg tomtom and windows) WILL see them and assume that it is another POI file.
you have 2 options:
1) live with it
or
2) connect the tomtom to, eg, a windows machine and manually remove the temp files - BUT next time you copy POI files you will get the temp files showing up again...
hope that helps?

Spot on! All fixed now.
I had 3 hidden files similar to "._GBG2010.ov2" (with additional leading full stop and underscore). Presumably the Mac had created these files during the copy process as you say.
Interesting that this is the first time I've seen this problem, but I regularly update my POIs using a Mac. Perhaps it was due to an "unclean" device disconnect or similar...
Anyway - all done. Thanks to you both for your advice. And MaFt - very impressed that you got to the heart of the matter with a single incisive question...!
cheers

Or use the dot_clean command from a terminal session on the Mac to clean up the dot_ files on the TomTom.
See here.
There is also a commercial plug-in you can buy that will offers this functionality, called BlueHarvest. _________________ Darren Griffin |
