Having just upgraded to v1.4 I had a peek at the hibernate mode function. This seems to set a time of 1hr, 2hr, 3hr ... etc
I'm assuming that this is the time for which the Satmap needs to have been inactive before hibernating to preserve battery life. If this is the case how useful will it be?
I'd have preferred the time to be in minutes -say choices going up in 5min intervals. That way I could study the map, and start heading up the ridge with the Satmap virtually using no power. That way I could probably get the claimed 100 hours out of the unit - making the Li Pol battery useful for backpacks. As it is I can't imagine a situation where I wouldn't want to look at the Satmap for an hour, let alone 2, 3 or 8! Which means it's unlikely I'll be getting the SD card to upgrade my platform software to enable this function.
Have I made the wrong assumption or does anyone else agree that as it is this set up is of limited use?

Ahhhhhhhh the penny drops Many thanks.
So just to clarify:
If I set hibernate mode to 4 hours, when it hibernates - that state will last for 4 hours before complete power off?
If so, when does it go into hibernation? Presumably you have to press the power off button - or is it automatic at screen off?
Either way this now looks like a really useful feature. I'll get me SD card ordered. Cheers
Yes, you turn the unit off and it goes into hibernation for the chosen number of hours (1 to 8) before it is powers off.
I have used the hibernation feature today and am impressed. Usually when I get to the destination where I went today, and turn the A10 on, it can take anything from 3 to 5 minutes to lock on to the satellites. Today, with hibernation set to 1 hour I switched the unit on at the rail station, got a lock (which was quicker than usual, ?perhaps due to the new software), then switched it off. After the train journey, at the start of my walk, I switched it on and was amazed to find a sat lock within 5 seconds. To me this is a big improvement on standing still for several minutes hoping for the lock. And, since I don't need any trip data recorded during the train journey, the hibernation is far preferable to not having it. £10 well spent on the SD card. I suppose added battery life by using the feature just for navigation and not trip logging will also suit some people, but I like to do the logging, so can't comment on how much longer the batteries will last if hibernate is the prefered mode all of the time.
Many thanks folks. For most of my walks and bike rides I'll probably still track, but I see big benefits here on a backpacking trip, and for that I'd be willing to sacrifice tracking. Your idea GPSwalker of turning on, getting a lock and hibernating during the journey out is excellent, and an additional benefit I hadn't thought of.
