Lost favourites on map updates

Did this after having a Tomtom One XL for 18 months and paid (a lot of money £69) for updated new maps only to find that all my Favourites had gone.
Infuriating - how can I avoid this next time? Restoring from a previous back-up will (I believe) wipe out the 'new' maps and replace with the 'old' maps.

The favourites are stored in mapsettings.cfg located in your new map folder. Take a backup of the new one first.

Then you can try copying just that file across from a backup, it should work.

Recent application updates have caused issues when simply trying to cover over the mapsettings.cfg file that Darren pointed to. Issues such as rebooting of the unit when you turn it on.

What does seem to remedy the situation is, after copying over your old mapsettings.cfg file to the new map folder, connect to Home, go to Manage Favourites, make one change (delete a favourite or add one or edit one). Then disconnect the unit PROPERLY from the computer (Home's Device--Disconnect) and you should be good to go.

A method for retaining favourites as a custom poi data set provided by mikealder can be found here . Many use this method instead.

I learn't that the 1st time too and have never used fav again instead I made a poi and put them all in there now every map udate i don't loose or have to worry about any poi's ,simples

Restoring the mapsettings.cfg file has worked for me after the last two map updates.

The additional updating procedure described by David seems a good idea as it forces the application software to update the old file within the new map application.

If claver58 has a full backup taken before he installed the new map the mapsettings.cfg file will still be available to use.

Providing one made a Backup before installing the last map update then I can assure you that the favourites are there on that backup. They are in the mapsettings.cfg safe and sound. You will find it quite simple to copy them, I have. Remember, providing you have a full Windows backup you will never be left stranded.

I just connected my TTOne v4 to the pc and was offered an update for TT Home, which I installed.

I was then offered new maps which I then also installed.

While I was waiting I referred back to this this topic ready to restore my favourites per the above.

On checking beforehand I was pleased to find that I had not lost them.

It seems that the issue may have been resolved, either by the the new version of Home or an improved map installer, or both.

On previous map updates, copying the backed up mapsettings.cfg file has worked but, this time, I found that it hadn't overwritten it so, in theory, I hadn't lost any favourites or settings. The trouble was that it sent the device into a reboot loop.

If that happens, try going into "Operate my Go" in HOME and delete edit or add, a favourite. It worked for me.

I thought it worth posting here for those who habitually do the copy across or edit techniques that some of us have had the pleasure of an update to new map this week without losing favourites or POI (camera) alerts.

I only post this as I would have systematically done the usual had I not needed to leave the house as soon as update was done to discover I didn't need to do the copy across!

Not everyone seems to have experienced the same as I but worth checking first.
