My Nuvi 765 (which has been updated to the latest version 3.6) suddenly shut down (whilst travelling in France) and now keeps starting to the point where it is says "loading maps" and then goes blank and starts again. Very frustrating. Can anyone help?

Have a read of This Thread which details quite a few others with issues of re-boots and failed start ups with the 7x5 Garmin units, there are some suggested fixes other than returing the device to Garmin.

If you want to try disconnecting the battery see This thread excellent guide on how to do it by PaulB2005, bear in mind this will invalidate any warranty though!

Read the first link before the battery disconnect as then you will understand why its needed - Mike

Thank you Mike, but I don't think its the same problem. It does not shut down just continously loops from the Garmin logo appearing to loading maps

Have you got an SD card installed? if so, remove it and try again.

With the unit off, press your finger down on the bottom right hand side of the screen and switch on. Keep holding it until you are prompted to "Erase All User Data", and say Yes.

Thank you! Great idea - it worked. Any idea why this happened so that I may prevent it in future? But thank you for saving my holiday.

Which idea worked though?

Probably some sort of corruption of the data somewhere. Suspect it's just a hic-cup though...

Your idea of taling out the SD card, holding down the bottom right hand corner of the screen whilst switching on. The message you predicted appeared, I said yes and then it started normally.

My Nuvi 765 kept rebooting itself for some strange reason exactly as described by michaelj2. I just bought mine about 7 days ago. Luckily I came across this thread while searching Google. Well I tried PaulB2005 second option "With the unit off, press your finger down on the bottom right hand side of the screen and switch on. Keep holding it until you are prompted to "Erase All User Data", and say Yes." It just worked like a charm. I only hope this does not happen too often.

Thanks PaulB2005 Very Happy You saved my day.

No problem.

Just make sure you get the latest firmware and it shouldn't happen again....

I saw the same reboot advice given by PaulB2005 on another thread to try and resolve a weird routing problem on Garmin after an upgrade (I think). Does this mean that anyone complaining of being sent on silly routes by a Garmin may be a victim of this sort of corruption, and so a reboot stands a good chance of getting most routing problems corrected? I've always assumed that it's an inherent routing-engine fault, but clearly not (at least notalways) - if I'd realised a couple of years ago, I might have still been with Garmin!

Laughing Out Loud. Sadly, no. It doesn't fix any weird routing problems.... Well not that i noticed on my 760 and 765...
