|
|
I'm thinking of getting a 740, but I don't need the live HD service all the time. Does anyone know if we can dip in and out-perhaps subscribe for a month to cover a holiday or similar, then let it lapse when not so much travelling is being done?
I was thinking that perhaps I could use a TMC receiver (if it works!) for the no-so-critical journeys, and swap to live for a month at a time when it suited me.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Mike |

Yes, you can subscribe monthly (£7.99 in the UK), BUT it's a "rolling monthly subscription" and I've heard they want one month's NOTICE, so you always end up paying for another month.... |

Wasn't there a REALLY scarey story about somebody taking three months to stop his subscription? _________________ Dennis

thanks guys. It doesn't sound so tempting now. Perhaps a 730 would be a better bet!

I've also heard that it takes at least a month in practice to cancel and so this means the minimum period is 2-months. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Spooky!
His experience really puts me off the idea of LIVE services.
Thanks for the heads up Dennis.

Minimum period is always 3 months.
If you order a monthly sub on, say 16 June and cancel on 17 June, they'll "ignore" your cancellation notice until the next payment is taken on 16 July.
On the 16 July, the 30 "days" (actually the word "days" is missing from the email they send you!) notice period to terminate begins.
30 days later, on 15 August they will take a "final payment" and you'll still be able to use the service until 15 September.
So that's 3 months, 3 payments.
If you cancel on the second day of the free three month trial, you'll still pay three payments and get six months Live services.
Nuts. |

You could manage on your credit cards if you have several by using one that is about to expire. TT very quickly stop the service, in fact before your period of paid for service has finished, if they cannot take further payments from you.
I use the prepay service now and it is cheaper at £80 for 12 months. _________________ Drivelux |

If you don't need the Live services very often I would question whether you need them at all, occasional use of such a service will be nigh on impossible due to the subscription methods and termination.
I would consider a 730 with RDS-TMC as you still get traffic (not Live) the same maps/ IQ-2 Routes etc but in addition you get mp3 player and FM transmitter which the 740 doesn't have, this option is also quite a bit cheaper if you shop around - Mike |

Thanks Mike.
I agree, I think a 730 would fit the bill (as long as it has bluetooth to work with IOPlay-which I believe it does). The best I've found so far is £200 (without TMC), which I think is quite good.
Just have to wait until the paycheque!

All x20/x30 and x40 devices will work fine with the iO-Play so you won't have an issue with that.
Get yourself down to a local PC World/ Currys and run a price check on the RDS-TMC receiver accessory if they have any left as you can buy one of these for around £7 at the moment.
When you get your 730 just plug it in and its the same as a 730T but saving quite a bit of cash - Mike |
