Hi & good morning to you.
This is my first post so as a newbie please forgive me if I am asking a few silly questions. I did have a look through quite a few other posts first but cannot find the answers.
I have a TomTom 700 it is quite a few years old but I did the first TomTom update on it yesterday.
How do I now find out
a) What version of the software or is it called firmware I am now running?
I want to update the map that is on the machine it just says Western Europe and has never been updated.
b) how can I tell what version I am currently running?
My current Western Europe does not have the Canary Islands on it so I was thinking of either getting
C) Western & Central Europe V815.2023 £49.95 on the TomTom website
which has Canary Islands on it.
d) Western Europe V815.2023 £39.95 on the TomTom website
Can anyone confirm that both of these maps have the Canary Islands on them in particular Tenerife.
Is this my best map for updating the UK as well as my one appears well out of date and also getting the Canary Islands too?
Many thanks |

Have a look at the graphics that DennisN posted Here.

Many thanks | The Canary Islands are certainly on the W&C Europe 815.2023 Map, under Spain, but I don't know whether it will fit on the 700 Hard Drive. _________________ Richard

Thank you for the welcome
ok after yesterdays upgrade (well I think) I appear to be running a
TomTom 700 Device XXXXX XXXXX (Edited out - DennisN)
App 7.903 (9183/081205) OS2344
GPS v1.21 Boot 5.4201
Map Western Europe V568.0
Whatever all that means.........well I do know that the map is out of date.
I have noticed that some people have downloaded a map of Tenerife as a separate download from somewhere I cant see this on the TomTom site is there somewhere else to obtain maps from that work on the TomTom.
regarding size of map I thought that the TomTom 700 has a hard disk size of about 2.3G so provided I delete the old map off or that it is automatically deleted when you install a new one either of the maps Western & Central Europe or Western Europe should fit am I correct.
I am also going to Las Vegas in April so will want to download a map of the USA in that area or is it better to get the whole USA.
Can I just store the maps to my computer hard drive via explorer and swap around as necessary.
Thanks |

First off, let's look at what you've actually got already.
Tap screen...
Tap Change Preferences
Tap the right arrow (if necessary) until you see the icon Manage Maps and tap it
Tap Switch Map
Unless something has gone wrong, there'll be at least one other map on there, namely Canary Islands! To be honest, I thought the 700 already also came with North America.
Don't do anything, but at least you'll see what maps you've already got (only by name, not version/date). _________________ Dennis

Thanks again but sorry to disappoint. Well I am anyway........
The only map on the system is Western Europe
Just out of interest why did you edit some of the technical information?
Thanks |

Device id is specific to your own individual TomTom and we always recommend not handing this out. Maybe not greatly important, but better be safe than sorry.
OK, so what about your maps then?
When you buy one, it will come by download onto your computer, then you use TomTom Home to install it onto your 700. You really need Broadband to cope with the size (and cost - dial up you'll be there for the next six months!!). Normally (at least on more recent models) TT Home will remove the old map as part of the install process, so memory shouldn't be a problem. Don't delete it first, unless/until TomTom Home tells you to.
Although you haven't specifically said so, it sounds as though you already know how to use Home (you got the update to 7.903) and Windows Explorer. So it will be OK to store maps on your PC after you've installed them on the 700 (copy the entire map folder then delete it from the 700).
Right click in Explorer on the TomTom to find out how big the HD is and how much is free.
If you haven't already done so, right NOW is the time to backup your 700 using Windows Explorer (NOT Home) - copy everything to a new Folder/Directory identified by some reasonable name such as 700backup2008-12-30 and subsequent (regular) backups, especially always before you do any more changes/updates/downloads.
Only you can decide if area maps of USA are better than whole country - area maps mean you can't travel outside them, which won't be a problem if you only visit Vegas area. _________________ Dennis

Of the two Western Europe maps available, I would buy the bigger one. I upgraded to map v6.75. I know it's a bit out of date, but it's OK on the 700. The smaller map (at the time I upgraded) was cut down to fit the GO/XL's that only have 1 GB of memory. But since then the maps have changed and some of the Central European countries are now only available on the Eastern Europe map sets.
I still have my 700. The 2.5GB microdrive is not big enough to take the Western & Central Europe map and the full N America map. I took it apart and upgraded it!! I now have a 8GB CF card in it, in place of the microdrive. It takes the Western and Central Europe map as well as the full N America map, and there's room for more !!
Here's how I did it: Link _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

That 700 is a damned good device and I don't think TT have improved on it since (apart perhaps from the satellite thing chipset for better acquisition). I went round Europe in 2006 without a hitch except a couple of roads in Italy where they seem to build new roads faster than they drive! France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Italy. OK, the ASN was defeated by some of those enormous tunnels in the Alps, but to be frank, it's not easy to take a wrong turning inside those, is it?
I have always regretted letting my 700 go to son-in-law earlier this year. Every time I see one advertised, my credit card fingers itch madly! _________________ Dennis

Dennis
how itchy?
I have a 700 in mint condition with all original accesories and box plus additional colour covers. Hardly used as for my wife (mainly as a handsfree) but she refused to put it in the car for her short trips in case it got stolen when she parked! She now has a 910 I bought stupidly cheap in Halfords, but still hardly uses that either!
I have been meaning to put the 700 on ebay for ages now - offers?? But I don't accept credit cards. _________________ Peter

I have a 700 in mint condition | Thanks Peter, thoughtful of you and I'm tempted by knowing it won't be an abused one. However, mostly because a fourth device on the windscreen would be a little too much, I'll probably offer son in law a trade in, letting him have my 720 in place of it. _________________ Dennis
