Welcome to the forum, have a look at the base of your XL and does it have an SD card or SD card slot?
If your unit has the required slot consider purchasing a 2GB capacity card and copying everything from the old card to the new one, this will also have sufficient capacity for a USA map which you purchase/ download using the TomTom Home software - Mike |

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the prompt reply...my XL does not have an SD CARD slot on it at all... it does however have 1GB of internal memory, so I would be able to have the UK/Ireland and the Canada/Alaska map on the unit with no space limitation whatsoever...
I am a tad apprehensive that it would work over in Canada if i left the UK map installed...
so am i to believe that the TomTom would infact be universal as to its working in different countries providing that I had the appropriate map...
thanks once again for your time and patience...

You can use the device in Canada with the correct map installed, you can leave the UK map on the device as it won't matter. All you do is go to Change Preferences/ Manage Maps/ Switch Maps and select the map you want from the presented list.
You might be able to get the full North America map on the device if you remove the UK map to free up space as it is 855MB in size, the Canada map at only 140MB will fit the internal storage space with no issues of storage space or freeing up space - Mike |

As Mike said you would be better off just storing your UK map on your computer or CD backup freeing up space for the complete North America map, I think you will have a more complete map than just Canada Alaska.
By the way welcome to Canada in 2009.

Thanks Gary..
But I think that the Canada/Alaska map will be my best option.... as I will not be crossing any borders into the USA...
Just be driving from Vancouver to Saskatoon via Whistler, Kamloops, Valemont, Jasper, Banff and Drumheller... and then driving back to Vancouver by the most direct route in the August. |

Then that should do fine!
That is a beautiful part of our country you should enjoy!! |

so.... bummer...I take it I am unable to update the Canada map from the comfort of my armchair here in the UK... I suppose I will have to wait until I am on Canadian soil.... And that ain't gonna happen from my hotel room in Vancouver....
And I won't know if all is working till i get to Canada |

What am I missing? You say you can purchase the Canada map. You say you have room to install the map. So what needs updating?
And, if you can purchase and install it now, why can't you switch to that map via Manage Maps--Switch maps and plan a route in Canada from point A to point B to see if everything seems ok? _________________ David |

Just use the Home software while in the UK to purchase the Canada map and install/ activate it on your device then go to Change Preferences/ Manage Maps/ Switch map and select the Canada map from the list - not you can play around adding POI, favourites or anything you might need for the trip.
Once complete simply switch back to the UK map - Mike |

sorry... what I meant was the user corrected updates...
No way that I can see that will allow me to plan a route in Canada after I have switched maps, everytime i select the canada map my TT1-XL informs me that there are "no useable locations near GPS Position" and then just displays a blank screen.
I have managed to get the map up via the POI's and then browse through it manually...
I did say that I was a Noob... |

Yeah, Navigate to-- won't work but Advanced Planning from point A to point B should work. For example, after selecting the Canada map, use the Advanced Planning preference and select city as Vancouver British Columbia) and destination as Regina (Saskatchewan).
Try that. _________________ David |

thanks Guys.
I gave the unit to my Son..he got an A-B route working using the "prepare route" option.. i just ran the route demo to make sure all was working.. I suppose it will all work flawlessly once i get to Vancouver and the unit can pick up a proper GPS for the map.... |

Yeah, that's right....
"Navigate to..." needs a GPS fix that matches somewhere on the chosen map, but A-B advance planning will let you plan any route on any map.
As far as I know, you should be able to get MapShare corrections for that map too. Just make sure that map is selected on the TT before you connect to Home and select "Update".
You can also search out any POI categories you want while you're still here, they just need to be copied into the Canada map folder. |
