Hi people
I am new to this forum so please forgive me if i,m in the wrong area . I have just purchased a new go 530t . I would like to know is it possible to hard wire this rather than using the cig connection . I have looked through the forum to find it very interesting and help full but i didn't manage to see anything about hard wire connections .

Most modern TT units take 5V so need a DC-DC convertor to connect into a car system, the x 30 range needs a standard 5V mini usb. There are quite a few mobile phone hard wire kits around that offer this but they are needlessly expensive.
For hardwiring a car, the simplest option is to buy a cigarette lighter extension trailing lead type socket either as a socket or by an extension and cut the plug off and hardwire that into the car then put the TT car adaptor or any suitable cigarette lighter based lead into this and take the other end to your unit.
As this will be out of sight, it is just as good as a commercial hardwired system. The 12V/5V conversion is carried out in the lead plug which usually also contains a fuse. If it is a lower quality plug or lead you can always lock the plug and socket together with a bit of tape. It sounds crude, but it is just as good as any other hard wired system. |

Just don't cut off the cigarette plug and wire direct into 12v, if you do you WILL fry your Tomtom! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes just to clarify my earlier point, you can cut the lead on an extension lead to get a 12V socket, but you must still use the TT lead with the 12V to 5V conversion in the plug as all TT devices work on 5V.
DO NOT CUT THE TT SUPPLIED LEAD AND HARDWIRE IT AS THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER PLUG ON THIS CONTAINS THE 12V TO 5 V CONVERTOR. |

This is something which I need to get sorted for a new motor im getting!
I would like to do the wiring myself this time rather then Halfords!
I like the idea of using one simple lead, from the buybits site, rather then my current setup of an extra cig lighter behind the dash, however I am a bit confused on where that open piece of wire should be placed, any ideas?
Thanks!

Probbly, but as MrT said above, needlessly expensive, especially when compared with the above solutions . |

On cables like the buybits one you have to be careful about the orientation of the mini USB plug.
On the one they show in the picture where the cable is perpendicular to and on the longer face of the mini USB plug it would not fit the X40 active mount as the cable entry part of the plug would catch on the upper body of the mount and it would not fully insert. The x40 mount needs a sideways or from the shorter face cable entry.
I know this as the Go530 supplied cable will not fit the Go940 |

The buybits cable mini usb plug looks exactly the same as I have now, so for me personally its not an issue.
The only thing I need to know is where that bear wire sticks into!
Any ideas on where I stick it!
Many Thanks

The easy option is to attach the wires to the back of the existing ciggy socket, this way you know its fused and they are generally easy to get at without tearing the car apart.
Just a word of caution though, if the car is equipped with air bags take great care when messing around inside the dashboard, if you set one off you could end up with a hospital trip and a very expensive repair - Mike |
