Hi
I bought a TT XL one (Europe) almost a year ago and it works fine except it needs a maps update. What do I do to update maps? Do I need an SD card for the slot?
I've logged on to TT Home and I get messages that I need to delete file to allow an upgrade. Can someone please explain in simple language what I need to do to allow me to upgrade the maps, speed cameras etc.

Thanks in advance, Steveo

First thing, before you do ANYTHING to your TomTom - back it up to your PC. Then if anything goes wrong when you start deleting things, you can get back to where you started easily. Without it, you are stuck.

Use Windows Explorer to make the back up (not TomTom's utility "Home"). Instructions are in the FAQs topic near the top of the TomTom section of this forum. (The TomTom forum section is HERE, and is a good place to post any further questions you may have).

Next, you will need to delete the existing map folder. I thought "Home" explained what to do when you try to update, but basically, you can either use Home to "Remove items from my Device" (on page 2 of the menu), or you can use Windows Explorer (again), to delete the folder called "Great_Britain_and Ireland" (or a similar name).

Then you can install the new map into the same space on the internal memory, using Home.

If space is still too tight due to the new map being larger than the old one, you may need to delete a voice or two that you don't use. Do that in the same way using Home (doing it the manual way is a bit more complicated).

If you want to use an SD card instead, you need to buy one that is NOT "SDHC" technology, just "ordinary" SD. This usually limits you to one of 2GB or less, although there are one or two available that are 4GB.

But to use the SD card, you need to copy EVERYTHING from the internal memory of the OneXL onto it, check it works OK by starting up the TomTom with the card in the slot.
Personally, I would do that using Windows Explorer, The TomTom's internal memory and the SD card will show up as TWO new disk drives in Windows. Just select and copy EVERYTHING from the internal memory and paste it onto the blank SD card (no need to format it).

Finally, you can do the map update to the card in the same way as above. If you have a card in the slot, the first thing that Home will do is ask you which storage location you want to use.

Hi Andy_P
Thanks for the reply and giving me some tips. I've now backed up TT using explorer to my laptop and will now get an SD card. One last thing, where's the best place to get map updates? Is it at Home or are there other sites?

Thanks again.

Steveo

Nope... only from Home I'm afraid.
Places like Amazon sometimes have TomTom maps on SD card, but they are usually VERY old.
