Ive been very impressed with my TomTom One (prob V1) which I've had for about two years or so.
I would like to replace it.
How much have they improved since then?
I want a simple TomTom that I can add POI's to via the SD Card. Im not bothered about BlueTooth or traffic smart planning. I find they usually exaggerate the incident or its too late.
I thought about The TomTom One XL.
I use the TomTom every day for my job and although I have tons of gadgets, its probably the most used!!
Any advice please,
Thanks

The newer TomTom lower end products don’t have Bluetooth or SD card slots they simply use built in memory The original One XL was supplied in a number of different models:
512MB internal Flash Memory with SD card slot,
1GB internal Flash Memory with SD card slot
No Internal Flash Memory with maps & application on SD card.
In the case of either of the top two units in the list you cannot use the memory card to add POI files. To do this will require connection to the PC but it is a very easy process.
To be honest I have used the newer XL which has no SD card slot and uses the Easy Port mount with a decent size speaker, this unit had what I considered the best screen in terms of lack of stray reflections nice and clear easy to see at all times. Decent volume, no Bluetooth and better still it simply worked it never crashed or let me down for the time I had the device - Mike |

Don't buy a tom tom with bluetooth or any traffic services, they simply don't work most of the time and the support is rubbish. |

Yeah, the latest models of TomTom no longer have expandable memory. That being said, the best "non fancy" recent TomTom models are the ONE 130S/XL 330S - offered at extremely reasonable prices, and are very easy to use. While expandable memory is nice, I've never needed extra space for POI purposes - however, the devices cannot hold multiple maps. |

A bit of a generalisation, but I know where you're coming from.
However, by getting a model with Bluetooth, you're getting one with better facilities generally. For example, I use the Bluetooth on my 720 for streaming music to my car radio and it is fantastic. I don't have a Bluetooth phone so haven't had a lot of experience with hands-free, but have tried it with my wife and daughter's phones which have, and it seems to work OK with them.
My advice is to get a device with an SD card slot. That means either the x20/x30/x40 models or one of the old One XLs. The one real turkey is the One 3rd Edition (and the latest One with the new mount), which is the only deliberately "dumbed down" model in which previous features were deliberately removed (such as itinerary planning). |

Just seen a friend of mine who has just bought a TT Go XL Classic from Argos, £129. Has an SD slot and provision to plug in an optional RDS-TMC adapter, Bluetooth, 4.3 screen. UK and Ireland maps.
Nice unit _________________ Triumph Tiger 800 XRt

A very nice unit... I tried to buy one a few weeks ago, but Halfords, PC World etc had all run out. I didn't think of Argos.
But at the moment you can get a (higher specified) Go 520 for less! |

Thanks for your answers.
Does TomTom have a feature like a snapshot of where you are so you can press a button and save a relevant position for later?
Would like it if they had a 'trackback' fascility where it would take you back in the same way you navigated.

Support what Mike says about the new XLs...just been playing with one in John Lewis and its brilliant. You could...as has been suggested...get an x20 type product and do what I will be doing should I go that way, and disable the BT and FM. Don't do the Navcore/maps updates just yet mind you....
The thing I want is TTS so unless TT release an upgrade for the XL range...subject of another thread by me....I will be getting the 720 as I doubt TT will be doing that very soon..if at all.
That way you get the great maps and routing PLUS the text to speech which I for one think is a big plus. Everything else...turn off. _________________ TomTom 720

Not exactly pressing a button for the snapshot you want, you can add your current position as a favourite and name it for future use after a few button presses.
Thats what I have on my 520 anyway.

If you drive a lot, you'd like the 540. £270 up front then £8/month for live services. There's a new HD traffic now which is much better than in the past. The device itself is a nice bit of tech too.
If you don't want to spend that much the XL or x20 series would be the way to go.
Have a look http://www.satnav-discounts.co.uk/tomtom-go/tomtom-go-gb-series.htm for price comparisons. |
