|

Well I did it...........I got myself a 730T today.
Only had a little play with it so far but I am VERY impressed with what I have seen so far.
Loading the PGPSW Speed Cameras onto it straightaway is , of course , a given.
Is there anything else that I should put onto it that will come in handy ?
Whats the verdict of the TMC on the 730T , does it work OK ?
When I got the TMC unit for my Navman F20 I had to buy an additional aerial and lead to get it to work.
I just wondered if the 730T TMC does the job with the aerial supplied ? _________________ Keith

Yes. Do it now, and whenever you make anything other than minor changes to your device. Then if anything goes wrong you can reinstall a backup to put it right.
Follow the instructions at #1 in the TomTom FAQs here.
And then read the rest of them. _________________ Anita

Thanks for the "heads up" Anita !!!
I have only had 2 sat. navs. before ( both small Navmans ) so this is my first Sat. nav. with all the "whistles & bells" so I want to do everything right.
It cost a lot of money and I don't want to knacker it up.
A thought as I type this , should I delete Tomtoms speed cameras off before I put the PGPSW speed camera database on it ? _________________ Keith

FIRST do that backup. Then, you can delete the TomTom cameras - I expect they are the same as on my new one I got last Saturday and they're not much use. Then get our cameras and set them up. Then do another backup.
You also have to get LMG - Latest Map Guarantee - it'll have map v800 on it and there's a later map v810 which you are entitled to free. You need an account with TomTom (email address), then connect to TT Home and click on Update my GO and it should tell you there's a new map available FREE - under the "More" button, it should tell you it's v810. After that has downloaded and installed, do another backup. Then start to RTFM and see what you can do with it and enjoy.
And remember Anita's advice - backup before and after every decent change - you may never need it, but you'll be devastated if you ever do need it and haven't got one.
Oh, the RDS-TMC antenna just plugs in and works, nothing else needed. Have the 730 at the mid bottom of your windscreen, trail the antenna across to one side, then up the side of the screen, a couple of inches away from the pillar.
Oh, and don't come back asking how long the battery lasts - use it plugged into your ciggy lighter at all times.
Oh, and take it out of the car every time you go out of the car. _________________ Dennis

The TMC works very well for me & I'm very impressed with the whole thing after having this model for a few months now. Some people have reported that they are not pleased with the TMC but I found it to be very accurate indeed & it's go me out of bother a few times now but I guess nothing is perfect.
I think you will find that the 730t is fantastic like I have apart, perhaps, from the slightly duller screen when I compared it to my Garmin 760 but other than that I think it's a blooming marvelous bit of kit & the Garmin was soon on ebay.
The traffic lane warning is kind of cool as well & I thought this was a bit of a gimmick but I find this also very helpful. |

TMC is very windscreen dependant. I have a hire car at the moment, a Citreon C3, and TMC works Flawless wherever I put the arial lead. I get a strong signal even in the Docklands where I work with all the buildings surrounding me.
Now when i put the unit back in my company car, I get nothing in Docklands at all.
My Company car has a heat reflective windscreen, the Hire car dont, so now I have subscribed to the GPRS TMC instead.

Athermic glass (Heat reflective) serves as a very effective block to both GPS signals and FM radio signals, the GPS should be OK as the newer receivers are very good in pulling in a weak signal.
The FM based RDS-TMC won't be much good at all when shielded by "fancy glass", try sticking it to the side window which should be made of normal glass, otherwise connection to an external aerial is the only real answer when confronted by this type of glass - Mike |
