A link to the latest Mapsource version is here. As to whether or not you're missing the point, it's difficult to say as you don't mention what your point is!

Mapsource is a program that comes with Garmin Mapping software.
You need the original software before you can use the 'update'.
Most garmin users have found problems with the latest update and have reverted to the version 6.13.7.
