Hi im new to all of the sat nav world, and am in a twiddle.I have a garmin i3 and the transflash card has killed itself. now i have the following files on my new SD card but things aint working properly.
I am in the UK
I have these
gmapsupp
and a folder called voice which contains several voice files
now i remember there was some more files on the original card but being new to this didnt back up the SD card except these two.( i know ALWAYS back it up )
What else is missing? because I cant do a planned route because it now doest display ADDRESS on the menu
If anyone can help or even better send me the missing files it would be extremely appreciated. I feel such an idiot for asking knowing it is my own silly fault for not backing it up in the first place, a mistake i dont intend to do again |

Hi and welcome.
The only other file i have that you haven't listed is the gmapsupp.unl file which contains the unlock code for my unit. (It'll be no use on yours) |

Further to that i don't think you'll be able to just copy the contents to a new card. The S in SD Card indicates Secure and the contents are locked to the card.
Garmin maybe your only help now. |

Sorry, perhaps i didn't make it clear about the GMAPSUPP files....
You should have a folder called Voices with several voice files and 2 other files in the root called
GMAPSUPP.IMG - approx 170 Mb (depending on your maps)
and
GMAPSUPP.UNL - 1 Kb
That's it... 2 files and one folder. |

yes. it'll be visible in notepad and be a series of random characters.

Right quick explanation. My sd car was frazzled, i kept a backup of gmapsupp.img and voice folder with contents, i lost the gmapsupp.unl file.i have transfered these 2 files onto a new SD card
I have product id for my i3 8 digits
I now have the unit id for my i3 10 digits
and it is currently running Europe NT v7 deluxe unlock
i have the rather long unlock code for it 25 digits
now is there any way out there that i can get this thing to do map routing again, i can see main roads but i cannot see streetnames and cant do postcode or address routing.
Some one out there with obviously more brain capacity than me must be able to help me or a way to get it going again, feel a bit miffed that silly SD card failed in the first place |

Even if you had a full back up, it will be no use trying to restore the backup to a different sd card as the maps and the sd cards are tied together (been there and tried all different ways, but have noticed the original sd-card can be put in other i3 units and work fine). |

Correct. The unlock code is locked to the SD CARD and not the unit. (Later units without the SD Card had the maps locked to the unit) and so you need to turn to Garmin to get a new unlock code for the new card.
I did point this out in my posts above....
Also my Unlock on my i3 in the UNL file is different to my Unlock Code according to MyGarmin, so without a backup i would have no idea what my unlockm code was. |

Sorted it with a bit of frustration. it appears i didnt need the GMAPSUPP.UNL file in the end. I used Mapinstall and reinstalled 08 maps with unlock code for that and everything seems fine, its all working properly now. Thanks for the help Paul and everyone else. Gave me a better understanding to my sat nav now. |
