If you can email me the picture I can create an icon for you? Alternatively all you need do is make a 22 x 22 pixel .bmp (bitmap) file and give it the same name as your POI.

Not quite. if it's not already a bitmap file (.bmp) then you can't just rename it, you have to convert it.

You'll also need to re-size it to 22 x 22 pixels.

Hi Darthsuma,

Welcome to the forum! Thumbs Up

Have a look at Bo Peep's Guide To Creating A POI (Point Of Interest), where you'll see how to create the .OV2 file (which you have already done) and the .BMP file.

Bo Peep wrote:
Arrow You will find that a .bmp bitmap logo has been created in the same folder as your .ov2 file. This is the standard POI bitmap and is just a black asterisk on an orange background. If you want, you can change this so it resembles the logo of the company you are creating a POI for so you can tell just by looking at the screen what POI's are in your area and so that it is distinguishable from any other POI’s you may create.

Arrow To do this, I use MS Paint as it is an easy program to use. You can either find a logo on the company's website which can easily be resized or create your own from scratch. When starting MS Paint, set the canvas area to 22 x 22 pixels (the required size for the POI bitmap.) and be sure to save the file as a bitmap (256 colour maximum.)

TIP: To make your icon stand out on the map, draw a 1 pixel wide black border around the image.

Regards,

Which Church? The POIs available from this site already have quite comprehensive files available for all Methodist and United Reformed Churches in the UK, and basic files for other denominations. Have a look here and go to the Community section to download the files. If your church isn't on the list (or just needs correcting), please submit it via the Submissions page so that we can all share in it.

It's a bit of a black art, making icons. Getting something that makes sense when you only have 22x22 pixels to play with is harder than it sounds, and simply re-sizing a bigger image is often disappointing.

As an alternative to the suggestion above, if you don't just want to add your church to an existing list but need it for something different, then you could always download the icon for the existing church-related POIs and modify it slightly by changing the background colour or something like that.

EDIT: Sorry, as we are talking about an icon for your church, I just realised that describing the process as a "black art" was probably NOT the best choice of words! Laughing

It's a bit TRICKY, making icons..... Smile

Re Customised POI file

As all the same type of POI (for example petrol stations) need be in one single excel file - how to do allocate an icon to this file?
where do you place the icon? so that it pops up in the gps each time it encounters that type?
thanks

Depends on the device but for most, the icon in .bmp format must have the same name as the POI file. i.e. asda.ov2 or asda.csv and the icon, asda.bmp

Device is a 60CSX

Understood about the name but does one include this file IN the CSV file or does one upload the icon as a custom icon?
And should there be a reference in the excel file to that icon and if so how ?
Thanks Darren
getting there!! Embarassed

You have the icon file AND the .csv file in the same folder and use POILoader to upload it.

The image you want to use is far too detailed and complex to be of any use when re-sized to 22x22 pixels I'm afraid.
