When my 730T reads out road names it sometimes is incredibly long-winded, e.g. "Take the A four thousand three hundred and forty two" instead of "Take the A-4-2-3-2".
Is there any way of persuading the TomTom to be less verbose?
Only just got this TomTom so I am still in play-and-find-out mode! |

Unfortunately not. All Text To Speech algorithms have this limitation.
One reason is that it helps keep the Data File smaller. When is a 0 part of a 10, 100 or 1000.

I don't see why the data should be smaller whether the TomTom says the verbose, or succinct version of the road name. It still needs to know what it is.
I find the verbose terribly annoying ... maybe the TomTom folks don't realise that in the UK we don't refer to road's in the succinct manner.
Who wants to raise a change request?  |

In real terms, the way WE speak them is ponounced as...
A1426 = "Ay fourteen, twenty six" (NOT Ay one thousand four hundred and twenty six)
A1000 = "Ay one thousand"
A1050 = "Ay one thousand and fifty"
A1152 = "Ay eleven, fifty two" (NOT Ay one thousand one hundred and fifty two)
A1300 = "Ay thirteen hundred" OR "Ay one three double oh", OR "ay one thousand three hundred"
I suspect this is the sort of thing discussed in the thread Andy refers to, but I've included the examples above just to demonstrate that if WE chop and change, and say different four digit roads in many different ways, how on earth is a TomTom meant to make up the right pronunciation, other than to have every single road number pre-stored in the unique manner WE tend to say them.
And even then, as per the last example, it's still gonna upset some people who say some a different way to others |

BUT you've already done three backups using Windows Explorer, plus burned a couple to DVD.

Abso-bloody-lutely! I have a backup out of the box, a backup after the map upgrade, and a backup after I added my favourites and PGPSW speed cams!
Just as well 'cos it's started being a bit flakey, but I will post about that in another thread... |

This is all true, but an option to switch between a few different methods would be good - you're right that we're not amazingly consistent ourselves, but the current method is not just long-winded, it's also very difficult to understand when you're bombing down the road! |
