Having looked at the spec for a few units it looks like OSUK maps can only be loaded into satmap units, is this right or are any of the Garmin units capable of this.

Viewranger runs on phones running Symbian S60 and uses the internal GPS if the phone has one.

No GARMIN units (handheld or otherwise) use the OS maps.

There are a variety of programs for Windows Mobile (Anquet / memory map / QUO - to name three) that will use OS mapping and if you haven't got any electronic maps already I would point you towards QUO - which has an inexpensive way of purchasing 1:25k maps - which is what you really need for walking.

On top of this you can buy all-in-one devices like the SatMap and RoadAngel which can use OS mapping - in the case of the RoadAngel these are MemoryMap maps - so you can also use them with their PC s/w.

But just to make sure - you CANNOT use OS maps from one supplier with mapping s/w from another - the OSGB licensing (as well as commercial considerations) prohibit this.

Thanks for the info, I looked on the QUO site I can only see it works on a PC. So lets see if I have got this right, with the PC based maps it will only let me plan a route and then export it to a GPS unit ( say a Garmin) where it shows the route on the installed (None OS) maps. If I want the unit to have installed OS maps it will need to be a Windows Mobile based unit, a Symbian s60 or a satmap which I assume all will accept routes from any PC based mapping application provided it is in an acceptable format ( gpx or whatever)

Quo works fine on a PDA based phone, it is not as feature filled as the likes of Memory Map, but for a simple to use package it is very good. I have it running on my HTC Touch Cruise PDA based phone which has integral GPS so its a single device solution, although for walking I tend to use it contained in an Otter box to afford the device some protection from knocks and water ingress.
The SatMap unit is another good unit for using OS maps but currently lacks the PC based planning, although there is an excellent online route planner that you can use should you choose this solution - Mike
