|
|
TomTom have today announced availability of the GO x30 series in the UK.
The new GO x30 range is similar in design to the x20 models that it will replace and adds IQ Routes(tm) technology and Advanced Lane Guidance plus a new user interface. Drivers will also have access to traffic information through the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver which is supplied with Traffic models.
We're awaiting our review units as I write this and will of course be publishing a detailed review of the new Version 8 features in due course. At time of publication the announced retail pricing is as follows:- 930 Traffic £399.99 inc VAT
- 730 Traffic £329.99 inc VAT
- 730 £299.99 inc VAT
- 530 Traffic £279.99 inc VAT
- 530 £249.99 inc VAT

Good news but a large price rise, £100 for the IQ Routes technology and Advanced Lane Guidance. Currently the 720 = £197, 730 = £299 I predict that by July the 730 will be selling £229 or less. |

Don't get me wrong...I still think TT is the overall best navi system out there......but did you see the article a few months ago in AutoExpress regarding the richest "motor trade entrepreneurs" and top of the list with several hundreds of millions in personal wealth was a certain Dutch gentleman.....can't remember his name right now but he might have has something to do with the accessory navigation industry!
And at a time when you can get a basic navi system for under £100....I too think TT might be taking our natural waste fluid out of us with a little too much ease!
Best regards David |

TomTom always price the top end models very high, to take advantage of all the early adopters that will pay amost anything to have the very latest. In a few months, I would guess that they'll be at least £100 cheaper than they are now. The recently top of the range 910 can now be bought for less than half of what I paid for mine, and on eBay second hand 910s not fetching much more than £100 - but it's only missing a few features compared to the 930! Someone would have to be a bit mad to upgrade from the 910 to the 930 at the moment.
I have to say though, the IQ routes and lane guidance ARE useful features. It's a shame you can't just buy a software only upgrade to version 8 (edit: corrected from v7) if you already have decent hardware like a 910. I presume that TomTom will never introduce these features on the x10 range?

??? I guess you mean v8 software? The x10 models are already running v7.
Anyway, in all probability they WILL be producing a FREE update to Navcore 8 software on most if not all of the old models - they always have in the past! In order to use some of the new features though, you are bound to need a new map that is designed to cope with them. |

I tried a 730T. Using IQ routes it routed me from 1 Tite street to Googde Street (Tottenham court road) via Picaddilly...........IQ routes most CERTAINLY has enough info for that busy stretch to know to avoid it since many black cabs I see are using tomtoms as well as other users.
Go down Piccadillyand the reported 8minute trip will become 30 to 80mins - especially when you get to Shaftsbury. I even set the time to be 7pm when theatres are busy.
Blocking it made the device go through grosvenor square which is the way routes should've done in the first place. IQ routes not great
Without IQ routes it gave the picaddilly route. with IQ it gave same route. I fiddled and fiddled but could only get the desired route manually.
No lane guidance on that route either in London. No lane guidance on the navigon 8110 either.
Other than that, the 730 was a very nice device. Better screen than the 520 next to it. Graphics were cleaner, more legible. Roads looked nicer. labelling of roads was nicer.
I will say that the menus are long and complex on all of them and instead of a back button you must scroll through .
Bluetooth didn't work with an E65 from nokia. They paired. but incoming calls crashed my phone (sustained vibration and automatic reset of handset ensued) and outgoing calls just gave crackling from the speaker. |

Agreed! I use TT6 on my iPAQ hx4700 and can only get new maps - at an extortionate price. I have updated once but as soon as it was out of hte "free download for recent buyers" the maps were updated again. |
