Looking for a uk only tomtom to replace a defunct ONE v1.

Its for my dad so will stick with what he knows - he will never use it outside the UK & Ireland - the tmc traffic would be a bonus if it works!

not looked at these for ages and the specs looks the same.

I need to buy something tomorrow as he needs it for the weekend...

I'd welcome any advice.

Thanks

Ian

520 has Handsfree for the Mobile Phone, mp3 player, FM transmitter, ipod connectivity, while the One XL doesn't have these features - Mike

Thanks Mike - does any of the above make the 520 harder to operate?

If he has trouble it normally ='s trouble for me!

If he doesn't need hadsfree or mp3 etc then get the One XL, the x20 units are great IF you need the features, no point paying for them if they will not be used or worse still cause confusion with the device - Mike

The functionality of the 520 is more or less the same if you do not want to use any of the extra features you do not have too
The voice input is available with 520 and also you get text to speech
( I do not think you get these with the one XL but may be wrong)

You can pick up a tomtom520 for about £ 155 !!! regarding the traffic which I do not have I think it can be a bit hit or miss at the moment whether it will improve at a later date I am not sure I think some people would say do not bother with it

thanks (again)

didn't realise the 520 had text to speech and i think the voice input would suit him as well.

so I've looked at the 520t and the 720t is only a tenner more - does this have more memory - can't find the specs on the tomtom site or do they use sd cards?

You are correct to mention the Text To Speech, something I stupidly forgot about, this feature is very well worth having, only the x20 and new (soon to be available x30) devices have this, a single US spec One XL-S does make use of the Text To Speech but its not available for this side of the pond - Mike

520 has 512MB internal memory and UK/Eire map
720 has 2GB internal memory and Europe map.

But they both have an SD card slot (empty as supplied) on which you can install extra maps. The x20 range are the only ones in the TomTom range that can use BOTH the internal memory and the SD card at the same time.

You can also use an SD card for hundreds of mp3s and use the TomTom as a Jukebox. that's something else you can't do on an XL

thanks for the help - ordered him a 720t for delivery tomrrow , just got to sort the camera's out and check the map version then he'll be good to go.

Guessing that sw/firmware updates are best left alone?

You forgot, first things first...the Windows Explorer backup! Do that before you do ANYTHING else.

The map you get will probably be v710, but v715 is available. When you first connect to "Home" it SHOULD offer it to you, but there are many reports that it doesen't (just says your maps are already up to date). If that happens, phone them and they will put the new map on your account (they will ask you to fax or email your receipt as proof of purchase).

At the moment, I agree, I think it is best not to update the software. The latest version won't offer you anything new and there are certainly some issues with it. Be aware that every time you connect to Home it will try to give it to you so you have to untick the box every time.

thanks for the tips - been using tomom since before navigator 1 (routeplanner and city maps) so know all about backups - backed it up in windows and added the the cameras and typed in the alerts.... pita.

its got 7.221 firmware and 7.15 maps so leaving these alone.

Haven't loaded up home and will leave it alone now - just waiting for him to pop round so we try the tmc in his car.

is it a feature that it turns off when connected to my pc's usb port when doing nothing after a couple of minutes?

Yes, it helps it to charge quicker, the current available from a standard USB port is quite limited.

Another tip, especially if you have typed in text to speech warnings for the cameras...
One of the standard "issues" with the 520/720 is it sometimes forgets all the warnings you have so carefully set up (it tends to do it more often if you keep connecting to the PC/Home, but I've known it happen randomly.
So as well as your full backup, make an extra copy of the "MapSettings.cfg" file from inside your map folder, and keep it somewhere else ON THE GO (it doesn't seem to mind it being on the root - it just ignores it).

Then if it ever loses the warnings if you can find a PC anywhere, you can just copy your backup one back over the top of the fresh one it has just created.
