I've got a speaker nailed on my door pillar which I used to use with my Streetpilot 2610 and I want to use it with my new 760. The 2610 had the proprietary Garmin connector on so I'm recabling for the 760.

Is the audio output on the 3.5mm jack on the side of the 760 mono or stereo? I'm only going to a single speaker so will be forcing to mono if I have to but I want to make sure I get the right connector.

Thanks.

it really doesn't matter. if you use a mono it will pick up one of the channels at least.
use stereo though since that's what it is.

It's more so I use the right connector, even if I use a stereo I'm going to be linking the two channels together but I'd rather slap a stereo plug up a stereo socket than use a mono one.

It is, I've connected it all up but it really is very quiet from that socket, it's definitely a headphone socket rather than one for an external speaker. I'm going to have to fit a small amp between the unit and my speaker.

perhaps there is a line-out mode in the software to boost it??? I'm sure you have volume up to full though for all sound modes (navi, music and system noises or whatever).

But yes, aux-out and even line-out at 3vrms needs some sort of amp to control the signal.

Most people will be putting it straight from the nuvi into the aux-in or cassette adapter of their radios so don't notice.

There's nothing obvious in the menus for that - I'm going to grab a Watson SP-180A from Ripoffs in Hockley which is a small amplified speaker - It's just a case of grafting the existing cable onto it and running some power up into it. That way I won't need to drive the output anywhere near as hard and will get a decent volume level. it's just about _usable_ as it is but I also want to load some audio books onto the GPS and it won't be any good for those.

yes, active speaker is the way to go - I wish i could remember the speaker, but there are some very small units that pack a hell of a wallop!

difficulty is powering it of course.

Not sure why you can't just use your on-board amp system?

Because more often than not I have my iPod playing through the internal wireless in the car using an FM transmitter. I can't have the GPS interrupt that in any easy way and as the speaker I've got is a mere few inches from my ear it makes much more sense to use it.

fair enough - most people would ditch the ipod now for the SD on board the garmin, but I sympathise with needing all my tunes being in one place as I'm the same Smile

Shame you didn't consider tomtom as that has ipod integration i think :p

Wouldn't touch TomTom, I've played with them and they just seem like a poor mans sat nav. I know that sounds offensive but it's not meant that way.

I've been using Garmin systems since the GPS II and this was the natural progression for me. Plus I only recently bought my iPod touch :D
